To be ready for this seasons reforestation projects we have been busy replenishing the native tree nursery. After last seasons planting of 10,000 trees in the Lake Arenal area our nursery was barren at best. We are also expanding the nursery to 20,000 this year. From December until June each year we collect many seeds and seedlings from the La Reserva forest preserve floor and keep the nursery irrigated. This is the dry season, the perfect time to do catch up work and prepare for the next planting projects.
The Finca Salvaje project is an excellent corridor project. Cindy Brand, a hospice nurse from the United States, is the owner of Finca Salvaje. She wrote us recently concerned about the possibility of the project being implemented this year. The pressure is on for her to either get the corridor project planted or buy more cattle and increase the size of the pastureland. Same old story, eh. More pasture equals less forests. She must earn enough to support the expenses of the farm. Doña Christina, who stays at the property, has a few head of cattle that she milks for some of the daily expenses but it’s not enough to continue without expanding the herd.
Let’s get behind this great project, located in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor, the place he spent his life working to preserve. We will connect two riverside forests giving the animals a way to reach each one and enhance their chances for survival into the future.
Please donate to this project, post the link on your Facebook or Twitter page, ask your friends and family to contribute so that we can get this twelve hectare tract planted tin the coming rainy season. The rains begin in June, not much time to waste.
Johanna is waiting to get the nursery planted with the 12,000 seedlings to be used for the project. Our friend, Ed Berhard is also waiting for us to give him the word so that he get the living fence posts ready to build the fence.
LET’S GET PLANTING IN 2010!!
