The average number of vegetable varieties produced by the village model farms has increased from three at the beginning of the project to ten.
The percentage of households with well-developed gardens increased from one to 68. The average amount of vegetables produced by target households doubled from 20 to 40 kilograms.
Households with improved and developed gardens consumed more vegetables and fruits than households with traditional or no gardens; the average weekly egg consumption by participating household members increased by 20%.
The income earned by participating households increased from 60,000 Riels (15 USD) to 100,000 Riels (25 USD). Most of the income generated from HFP activities was used for purchasing other food items such as beef and fish.
HKI has procured and distributed 14 varieties of good quality seeds to all 28 VMFs and 1,000 households.
HKI and both partner NGOs supported the VMFs to construct improved poultry shelters to keep poultry from harm. (A proper poultry shelter is essential to poultry and egg production.)
HKI supported the VMFs with irrigation facilities including 15 hand pumps, 8 pipes and 5 water pumps. (Appropriate irrigation of VMFs is essential during dry periods to ensure the year-round production of vegetables, fruit, seeds, seedlings, and saplings.)
2,084 chicks were distributed – three to each VMF and two to each household. HKI also supported all VMFs with vaccination kits and vaccines to prevent and control poultry diseases.
HKI provided several refresher training sessions to strengthen participants' newly acquired skills and knowledge. Refresher trainings were provided to partners NGOs, the VMF owners, village health volunteers, and a selection of women farmers/gardeners.
After receiving training and supplies from the HKI, all 28 village model farms (VMFs) established food production activities. HKI and our partners at the Rural Development Association spent a lot of time providing assistance to these farms, so that they could set up their activities well. Together we established irrigation facilities, prepared the bed/plot system, constructed living-fences, produced vegetables and fruits, seeds, seedlings and saplings. In addition, we prepared the compost pit and organic pesticides, and constructed poultry houses for the chickens. Most of the VMFs have to produce vegetables, seeds, seedlings, and saplings and are selling their products to generate income.
To date, 28 village-model farms and 1,000 target households have established food production activities after receiving training and other agricultural inputs such as seeds, seedlings, saplings and poultry birds from the project. About 30-40% of the households sell some of the produce and earn approximately US$ 6-8 per month, which they most often spend on buying other foods, paying children's school fees, housing and clothes.
HKI continues to work with the Rural Development Association (RDA) and Village Health Support Group (VHSG) to provide training and agricultural inputs for 1000 households in Battambang Province. HKI has conducted training on HFP practices and training on nutrition behavioral change communications (BBC) for local NGO partners, a training on HFP for the 28 village model farms (VMFs) in the district, and a nutrition BCC training for VHVs. Target households in Battambang Province have received homestead foof production training. The VMFs have each received up to 10 varieties of seeds and 10 chickens, 8 of which are hens. Households have received up to 5 varieties of seeds and 3 chickens, 2 of which are hens. Two VMFs received 4 varieties of saplings: papaya, guava, jackfruit, and mango. HKI has also provided live fencing made from ipil-ipil for target households.
