The Kindling of A Flame: Help Rebuilding A School
The Kindling of A Flame: Help Rebuilding A School

One can only imagine the losses that could have been due to a fire breakout.

The day of 14th March, Saturday, started just like any other quiet weekend at our schools until a fire broke out at Rayer Bazar slum around 9 am. The flames quickly spread to adjacent areas. Large sections of the slum were completely destroyed. The fire also reached the JAAGO Foundation School at Rayer Bazar, burning 5 classrooms. Till now, we have learned that a huge amount of books, shelves, benches, desks, walls, rooftops along with the classrooms have been burned in the aggression of this horrifying fire.

The slum is also home to many of the students, whose homes were damaged in the fire on that horrific day like a nightmare. It is not still clear what caused the fire. We thank the Almighty that it was a holiday for the school and students were not present on the premises; otherwise, there could have been a serious number of fatalities.

We appeal to all our sponsors and well-wishers to stand beside us and our students in this time of need and provide assistance to us so that we can ensure that the children can get back to their homes and their classrooms as soon as possible. Your help and contribution will help these children and their families to go back on their feet.

A Search for New Prospect:

Right after the trauma of fire incident, the whole world faced the new trouble of COVID 19. The world currently is facing probably the deadliest infectious virus- COVID 19 or Coronavirus as we widely know it. Countries all around the world are taking necessary steps to combat this virus which has affected and taken thousands of lives. There is a deeper problem rooted in this we believe. Coronavirus spreads rapidly through community transmission and to avoid spreading the disease the Government of Bangladesh has declared closing down all educational institutions.

Since JAAGO Foundation has a major project called “Education Program” to bring the light of hope through education among 3500 underprivileged children across 11 schools in Bangladesh, In line with the government's request to close all schools, JAAGO Foundation schools were shut on 17th March 2020. Prior to the closure students were giving lessons on hygiene and preparedness for Coronavirus. We continue to stay in touch with the School communities around Bangladesh through SMS and phone calls. Many of the parents of these students are not able to work and as shops shut down and people are no longer using rickshaws the situation for them will get worse for them. During these difficult times, we have started a relief fund. This fund is helping the families of the students with food and essentials for families and most importantly support toward healthcare.

It is very hard to fight the unknown but we can definitely slow down the spread of the virus and the misery. We are fighting with an invisible force and it requires huge motivation, willpower, hands full of support and hearts filled with empathy to get things done during this crisis period. JAAGO Foundation is working solely to help the community in this crucial moment. We are also aiming to raise funds to distribute food and other precautionary items to day laborers, including slum dwellers.

Life before Pandemic:

The students from JAAGO have always been very fond of their school. The activities besides their academic syllabus fascinate them to be more attentive towards their studies. Followed by different events arranged by our partners and donors our students often get to be a part of many amazing experiences. These events and visits keep our students inspired to move ahead with their dreams of breaking the cycle of poverty through education.

Flight of Fantasy:

One of the major experiences that our students have earlier this year that one of the country’s leading private carriers gifted 20 students of JAAGO Foundation school with the experience of an exceptional pleasure trip called "Flight of Fantasy".

“Flight of Fantasy” took the children away from the hustle and bustle of Dhaka to the world’s longest unbroken sea beach in Cox’s Bazar. The delights continued with a visit hosted by Bangladesh’s biggest aquarium, Radiant Fish World authority only for the JAAGO students. Afterward, the children were taken to lunch and presented gifts before being flown back in the evening.

Friendly Football Match (JAAGO Vs AISD):

Following month the JAAGO Foundation School’s football team was invited to be a part of a “Friendly Football Match” arranged by the leading international school of the country AISD. Team JAAGO has sealed the match by 10-2 goals against the AISD middle school team.

A Day with AISD Service Learning Team:

Apart from this the AISD High School Service Learning team also invited our students to spend a day with them where the students got to play, explore and learn more about chemistry experiments and sports. The day was finished with a dinner where the bonding of friendship among the students was worth being observed.

Gratitude Note:

We are grateful to individuals, our NGO partners, corporates, donors and supporters for their generous support on the “Free of Cost School for Underprivileged Children” project. On behalf of all the students and parents who are related with JAAGO, we would like to express our heartiest gratitude. Without your contribution and support, our journey would not have progressed and prospered in changing the lives of these children who came from an economically disadvantaged background. We request you to continue your love by supporting this project of “Free of Cost School for Underprivileged Children”.

A Wonderful Ending to an Eventful Year
A Wonderful Ending to an Eventful Year

JAAGO Foundation believes quality education is one of the strongest keys to unlock an individual’s mind liberating them from the confinement of ignorance. Focus on quality education holds the most important place for developing countries like Bangladesh where poverty and illiteracy reign over sustainable socio-economic development. To transform Bangladesh’s huge human resources into skilled workforces, providing access to quality education to the underprivileged is imperative and JAAGO Foundation dedicatedly works towards achieving this goal.

This year our JAAGO Foundation school students participated in the Primary Examination Completion Examination (PECE) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) Examination. In Bangladesh, after the completion of primary education- class 5, students need to take PECE, in order to evaluate what they have learnt in the past years. JSC is also an examination that needs to be taken in class 8 which helps to assess the understanding about the skills and knowledge of the students about a particular subject matter. In November 2019, the first batch of PECE candidates and the third batch of JSC candidates of JAAGO were handed over their admit cards. We are expecting these children to successfully complete their exams with good grades.

Financial Inclusion for All

The World Bank has highlighted the increasing importance of financial inclusion as a key enabler in helping to reduce poverty and boost shared prosperity. Together with Mutual Trust Bank (MTB) in Bangladesh, JAAGO has introduced a new program called ‘MTB ANKUR’ (translating to MTB Seedlings), allowing students in our JAAGO Rayer Bazar and Banani schools to open their own savings account without the usual required service or maintenance costs.

‘MTB ANKUR’ will allow our students access to banking and give them a chance to learn about the importance of saving and how it may be used to facilitate everything from long-term goals (such as University) or unexpected emergencies as well as day-to-day living expenses, therefore improving the overall quality of their lives.

During the launch of the ‘MTB ANKUR’ program, when parents were asked how this opportunity could change their lives, Tarni* was elated, explaining that growing up the way they had she would have never imagined that she would be able to see her daughter grow up to be able to have access to a place such as a bank. As in Bangladesh, the men of the families are often the only ones that have a voice when it concerns how and what money is spent on, ‘MTB ANKUR’ provides a chance for our girls in particular, to gain a little more control over their lives.

‘School of Five’, Letting Kids Thrive

Lifebuoy's renowned ‘School of Five’ program has been implemented into our Banani school. Through the introduction of 5 superhero characters, Unilever’s Lifebuoy ‘School of Five’ are encouraging students in schools to wash their hands 5 times a day, to help prevent infectious diseases, such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, the two leading causes of death for children under the age of 5. Since the launch of their program in 2006, Unilever has seen a global 36% reduction in childhood deaths from diarrhoea from 2008-2016, which is equivalent to over 265,000 lives saved. A team from UNILEVER came to our JAAGO Foundation Banani School and taught kids the importance of handwashing through games and storytelling. They also distributed Lifebuoy soap bars among our children. The introduction of the ‘School of Five’ will teach JAAGO students as well as their families the most effective way to wash their hands and the importance of proper sanitation.

Science and Innovation for a Powerful Perception

In a fast-paced country like Bangladesh, the children need to be aware about the importance of science behind rising environmental crisis, sustainability and other such issues. To combat such arising issues, a four day Science Film Festival (SFF) was organized by Goethe Institute Bangladesh in collaboration with JAAGO Foundation, Children’s Television Foundation of Bangladesh, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, and PASCH-Schools: Partners for the Future, South Point School and College, Oxford International School, Maple Leaf International School and Mastermind International School.

The main aim of SFF was to acknowledge the youngsters about the different approaches of science and how scientific issues can be solved. Therefore, science communication was highlighted through this platform and science literacy, technological & environmental issues were focused through film and television content. Competitions were held in different categories, and the students of JAAGO participated as well, in which one of the students won the first prize in Science Film Festival Costume Competition.

The students of JAAGO take great interest in participating in various extracurricular activities and hence, the students presented their respective projects and experiments at the Science Fair, in which they showcased about topics that speaks out to them. In addition, they have also participated in numerous reading, speaking and art competitions.

Information Center on Nuclear Energy arranged an educational event related to science and nuclear energy where they demonstrated scientific experiments and taught them about nuclear energy. They also distributed souvenirs among the students. The students of class 6 participated in the event. They were very enthusiastic to learn about new experiments of scientific materials.

ICT Division and Norwegian Embassy Visit to JAAGO Schools

In April 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the scheme titled "Digital Island Moheshkhali" that connected the Moheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar to Dhaka. This project was launched to improve the quality of public services through proper utilization of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in a region of the country, where it is difficult to reach. In 2016, the Government of Bangladesh, Korea Telecom and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) jointly started implementing the “Digital Island- Moheshkhali” project at Moheshkhali lsland in Cox's Bazar district. JAAGO joined the project as an implementing partner in April 2017. Recently officials from the ICT Division visited our JAAGO Foundation Rayer Bazar school where they visited the Digital Moheshkhali Project Center. They observed our digital program and its operations. It was a great experience for us and also them to know about our education program

Diplomatic relations between Norway and Bangladesh have been established in 1972. Since then the Norwegian Embassy has been supporting development works of the country. During the last quarter of the year, the JAAGO Foundation Rayer Bazar School was visited by the deputy head of mission Ms. Kristin Waaeringsaasen of the Norwegian Embassy. In the visit, interactive sessions with the students took place and a cultural program was held where the students performed a drama and recited rhymes followed by an art competition.

Self Protection for a Safer Future

Needless to say, we are living in a dangerous time where feeling safe and secure seems like an unlikely state for a person. Women more likely than others are victimized from the heinous crimes that take place. Also, it is important for children of any gender to gain self discipline and control and keep themselves physically active for emergencies and self protection purposes. In order to boost their confidence and in control of any difficult situation, JAAGO conducted a ‘Self Defense Workshop’, in which the children, especially female students were taught proper techniques to defend themselves and make them more self-reliant.

Thank You Note

JAAGO Foundation started with only 17 students in a single room 12 years back. After all these years when we look back, the achievements seem incredible! With 2019 coming to an end, we just wanted to thank all our donors and sponsors for the generous contributions that have been made to the ‘Free-of-Cost School’ Program. Together we have been able to completely change the lives of 3,500 children living in slums in Bangladesh. We could not be here today if not for your support over the last 12 years! Our endless gratitude to all our supporters!

From Slums To The Land Of Opportunities
From Slums To The Land Of Opportunities

JAAGO started its journey 12 years back with one school and the only vision to provide quality education to underprivileged children. After completing more than a decade’s journey, JAAGO has reached a position where we are witnessing the outcome of our efforts.

To many it might seem like a story, but this story has now become a real life example of the phrase “Hard work pays off”. Siam is an ordinary slum boy, came to our first JAAGO school when he was six years old. Recently, based on his results and co-curricular activities, he has received a 100% scholarship to study in the prestigious United World College (UWC) in USA. UWC has 18 colleges around the world including USA, Singapore and India. After a very competitive process, this year UWC has selected 30 applicants from Bangladesh and Siam is fortunate enough to be one of them.

Siam belongs to an average family who lives and works in the Rayer Bazar community. His parents are astounded by his achievement and very grateful to JAAGO! Siam believes that his achievement is not only because of JAAGO’s quality education but also for the love and care he received from the team. Although it was very competitive but Siam’s merit, skills and vision helped him accomplish the first step towards his dreams of becoming a doctor. JAAGO aspires to set many more examples like Siam and inspire children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Prospects Of Creative Learning

It is always exciting for children to find themselves in a competitive environment! Being from a disadvantaged background has many diverse effects on our children and we are always searching for opportunities to educate them as well as entertain them. Hence, we organize extra-curricular activities for them. In this quarter our Teknaf School arranged for a reading competition in both Bengali and English for the students of class 1, 2 and 3. The children read out from their favorite books to their class and our teachers selected the winners of the competition. As it was a competition, it surely circulated a tension and excitement at the same time among the students! Everyone cheered for their friends who won prizes! 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were given to 8 winners in total from 2 categories (Bengali and English). The winners received books as their reward.

Our Chittagong school organized for a spelling competition for the students of Class 2, 3 and 4. This was also divided into two categories: Bengali and English spelling. A judge panel was set for evaluating the students. Children in the Chittagong school learnt and enjoyed a lot throughout the whole process. In the end, the education coordinator announced the winners and distributed the prizes.

Enlightening Young Minds With The Knowledge Of Virtues

Education is the most significant skill in a child’s life. Education makes them confident, competent and guides them throughout life. Yet there are a variety of social issues and behavioral practices that JAAGO believes children need to be taught while they are young. Children have much greater capability of learning faster than adults. They easily tend to learn what they see and when they experience aggression, violence and cruelty around them, it is more likely that they would be influenced by these actions. JAAGO, in partnership with NGO and INGOs, conducts several workshops and teaching sessions for the students. In the month of September, a theme based workshop titled “Non-Violence & Tolerance” has been held in JAAGO’s Banani School. The session became very interesting for them as it comprised of visual interactive sessions along with presentation. The students also expressed their thoughts and feedbacks in the workshop.

The rise of crime is a major problem in Bangladesh. Ranging from children to elders, no one feels safe at their own place. Although the authorities are always using their expertise to solve this issue, but JAAGO believes that it is us who can make a major difference if we are cautious and vigilant. Recently, JAAGO has conducted an awareness session in the Rajshahi school. All the parents of the students were invited to attend the session. The topic of this awareness session was “Kidnapping and Safety of children”. Parents were guided to be more careful about their children and their movements. The trainers also answered various questions by the parents.

Nourishing The Mind And The Body

A lot of our students come from families where affordability for health check-ups is a vital problem. Sometimes they have impoverished health conditions and also suffer from minor health issues. JAAGO Foundation’s youth development program Volunteer in Bangladesh (VBD) campaigns for many social issues and try to raise awareness in the community. Our VBD team of Chattogram district organized a Free Eye Camp and Blood Grouping Event in September. This initiative was taken very positively among the local community. More than 200 students received free eye check-up, blood grouping and medicines for any problems identified.

We always tend to think about physical fitness above all. But do we give enough effort on mental health of children? The answer to this might be negative, but we can always take necessary steps to improve further! In this quarter JAAGO Foundation’s psychologist conducted a mindfulness session in the Banani School. In this session the children participated and learnt about meditation. In an informal setting they were taught about the purpose of meditation and asked to perform it by themselves. When they tried, there was fun and laughter everywhere! Still they concentrated with their best efforts. The session ended with the students thinking and explaining about their dreams. It was a very interesting learning for them!

A Search For New Prospects

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) signed a memorandum of understanding with JAAGO Foundation at the university chancellery in Dhaka. As a part of the MOU, the university would host the students of Class VIII to Class X of Jaago Foundation schools twice a year. The university would invite students and give them an advanced experience of the university. The students will visit the university campus and receive basic training on various topics. This will give them the opportunity to experience a university environment beforehand and also help them think and decide for their future. On 25 July, the students of class 8 & 10 went to ULAB’s main and permanent campus. They visited the Library, IT Lab, Classrooms, Auditorium, Permanent Campus, played Cricket Match in the ULAB Ground and also Indoor Games. The students enjoyed the trip very much and look forward to more visits like this!

Gratitude Note

Our largest project, “Free of Cost School for Underprivileged Children” is making progress only because of our individual donors, corporate partners, INGOs and NGO partners who support us selflessly! These children from disadvantaged economic backgrounds would not have had the chance to build their lives if there was no support from all of you. Your generosity motivates us to work relentlessly for the future of these children. On behalf of all the students, teachers, parents and employees of JAAGO, we would love to convey gratefulness with all our heart. Please continue to show us your love by supporting our project “Free of Cost School for Underprivileged Children”.

Creating Bridges & Cherishing Dreams Deep Inside
Creating Bridges & Cherishing Dreams Deep Inside

In the year of 2019, JAAGO has stepped into 12 years of establishment, continuing to touching lives of thousands of children and families. This has only become possible with your valuable support. Today with your help, we are directly educating a number of 3500 underprivileged students in our schools. These students education are supported by generous individual like your ones. At JAAGO Foundation, we call this supporter as sponsor parents of these children, who are letting them spread their wing of dreams and encouraging them to fly high.

These students often visit the workplace of their sponsor parents to meet them or they get together at JAAGO’s office premises. They interact with each other, sharing thoughts and express their gratitude, express their dreams and takes suggestions. We encourage these interactions to increase the bonding of each other, helping to create the bridge between the sponsor parents and their children.

Classroom Market To Inspire for The Best

To bring out the best result from our students, we inspire our students in such a way that we could grab the attention and interest to the highest level. Classroom Market is a concept which we practice in our Schools with a regular interval and students are eager to participate on that. The concept is more likely buying objects as we buy objects from shops in real life. But the difference is that students are buying objects by their points gained by doing their classroom activities and showing excellent academic performances. It mainly keeps the students focused in the classroom activities and makes them motivated to learn more. In the end it is full of excitement and fun. Students loved the new experience by this activity and they are willing to engage in class activities and studies. We arranged the systems in all the 12 branches of JAAGO Foundation.

Using Spirit of Football: Sports for Good

At JAAGO Foundation School, we do not emphasize on children education only but we do focus on extracurricular activities along with sports. Recently Fifa’s Asian Region’s authority Asian Football Confederation, Coaches Across Continents, Bangladesh Football Federation and JAAGO Foundation has initiated a joint activation by using the medium of Football. They organized a day long training program where 75 students of JAAGO Foundation School took part and received training from international football experts, who have joined from English Football Association.

The participants were delighted to participate on the program where they received jersey, ball, cones, and vests along with valuable experience. This opportunity has given them the chance to play on professional turf. It helped the students to be inspired to dream of becoming footballer in future.

Educated Mother Is Promise of Civilized Nation

Currently JAAGO’s schools are thriving with numbers and educating marginalized community children of hard to reach areas of the country. The scenario hasn’t been like this before; in the beginning in 2007, we had to lure students by giving away different commodity to the parents so that they send their children to school. But now, the scenario had changed a lot. We provide free of cost education in English Version of Bangladesh Government and we recruit only 40 students in reception grade per branch each year. For these 40 students, we get around 3000 applications in different branches and we sort among them out the find the most suitable one’s.

Turning a community’s interest into sending their children to school is a big achievement for us. The mentality had changed a lot and this is something on what we cherish after 12 years of our journey. At JAAGO apart from mainstream education, we build a practice of retention of our culture. Recently, we celebrated Mother’s Day across all of our schools. On that very occasion, our student created special designed cards for their mothers to show respect and tribute in honor to motherhood. We would like to create a practice of appreciating their mothers from very early stage of their lives with a hope of bringing sustainable perspective towards their mother.

Building An Excellent Culture with Extracurricular Activities

JAAGO Foundation educates the children with the maintenance of high quality and unique extracurricular activities to provide a wonderful learning scope to the students. Recently we celebrated crown giving day at our schools where we nominate the best skill of students and recognize them with a crown infront of the whole classroom. These skills can be anything such as best in art, reciting, debate, sports, discipline etc. We organize it in every quarter where each students feel special and get the motivation to do good in future.

Also every week, our teacher’s gives meditation session to the students which help them to concentrate better, focus on things and do good in all activities. Apart from these, showing gratitude to teachers, conducting leaf craft work, drawing of national flags and so many things goes on JAAGO Foundation Schools.

Thank You Note

We are grateful to individuals, our NGO partners, corporates, donors and supporters for their generous support on “Free of Cost School for Underprivileged Children” project. On behalf of all the students and parents who are related with JAAGO, we would like to express our heartiest gratitude. Without your contribution and support, our journey would not have progressed and prospered in changing lives of these children who came from an economically disadvantaged background. Bringing The Best By Nourishing Our Children
Bringing The Best By Nourishing Our Children

JAAGO Foundation is an organization where we promote diversity in every sphere of our works and engagement. JAAGO Foundation's model which includes, among other things, interactive 2-way learning methods, strong emphasis on the English and Bangla languages, other culture, provisions for extracurricular activities, counseling etc. These innovative approaches further quality, primary education in Bangladesh. JAAGO Foundation’s commitment, vision and passion will ensure that thousands of underprivileged children get access to education and the opportunity to improve their lives and the prospects of their communities. We earnestly thankful to all our supporters and donors who made this possible for JAAGO Foundation to create a brighter future of these children.

Driving The Curious Mind - A Step Towards Science

Children are already learning at birth, they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. Poverty in childhood can have implications throughout an individual’s life, whether it’s physiological problems from poor nutrition or psychological issues arising from the social implications of poverty. We nourish these underprivileged children in such a way that now our children have the most curiosity about science. JAAGO children always think out of the box and currently they are very innovative towards science by creating magnificent science models to solve the problems of life. Children created science project like a Solar Cap by attaching a small fan, Hand Generator and Electricity Battery out of an ordinary potatoes. To encourage these children more towards science, JAAGO made them to display and present these models by inviting guests. JAAGO makes sure that these children can think they are unique and special and can conquer the world.

Believe in Diversification to Love The World

Our children are unique, but what all children have in common is natural curiosity and an innate ability to learn as their brains are dynamic and constantly active and busiest of all. Different languages are one of the many ways through which culture affects development. Our JAAGO kids believe in diversification and they want to explore different culture and languages. They are the most fascinated and excited to know about the world and adoptive to new thing. Therefore, a Japanese Student called Amina Yajima conducted 3 days’ workshop for JAAGO children focusing on Japanese language and culture. Our children were excited to know about a country and its culture. It is crucial for our children to gain knowledge about different culture and languages which will develop an insatiable curiosity about the world and a love for the people around them.

Reading is The Key Path for Brighter Future

Reading is an essential foundation for learning. The ability to understand written language is a basis for all education, and affords access to employment, rights, and services. Every child requires basic foundational literacy skills to open up life choices and opportunities. Thinking about the underprivileged children, World Literature Centre (Bishwo Shahitto Kendro) launched a BOOK READING PROGRAM for the children of JAAGO .The organization provided our students some selective books to read for the year. After one year, there will be an assessment of our JAAGO children based on their reading ability. To encourage our JAAGO students to read more, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro will be organizing an award giving event for this program. It is a wonderful opportunity for the children to improve their reading ability so that they can gain more knowledge by reading books and also in this way our children will gain not only world literature but also they will have knowledge about Bengali literature. JAAGO believes allowing children to get an early start by developing their emergent literacy skills, is essential to improve reading abilities in the long term.
