444 children secured of a daily lunch in school (2021/2022)

The commencement of this school year was a busy period for us. The number of children whose parents could not afford daily lunch at schools increased since onsite teaching resumed. We worked tirelessly with our partner schools and suppliers to make arrangements to provide daily lunches to these children. In addition to the schools we currently collaborate with, a further three schools have made requests for our assistance.

Thanks to your help, we were able to respond to requests from all schools. During the upcoming school year 444 children will receive daily lunch at school. We are happy to mention that this is the largest number of children taking part in our lunch program since the charity was founded.

We are pleased to advise that children will receive daily lunches at the following 10 primary schools:

  • Elementary school Podorašje in Srebrenik (27 children)
  • Elementary school Zahid Barucija in Vogošca (30 children)
  • Elementary school Musa Cazim Catic in Zenica (69 children)
  • Elementary school Srednje in Ilijaš (39 children)
  • Elementary school Izet Šabic in Hotonj (30 children)
  • Elementary school Mak Dizdar in Zenica (56 children)
  • Elementary school Miroslav Krleza in Zenica (53 children)
  • Elementary school Aleksa Šantic in Vukoslavlje (60 children)
  • Elementary school Hasan Kikic in Gracanica (50 children)
  • Elementary school Donja Vidovska in Velika Kladuša (30 children)

Our efforts will continue in raising funds for the next school year. You can also help by a one-time donation or a monthly donation of €9 to support the delivery of daily lunches to underprivileged children.

Thank you for your support!

Dear donor,

We are delighted to advise you that, thanks to all the support, we have reached hundreds of children and families in the first half of this year. The pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty and difficulties for many families. Parents, teachers and school management are very grateful for all the help.

We spoke to Armin Hrustic, Principal of Podorašje primary school, and we are happy to share his reaction:

“On behalf of the students, their families and myself, I would like to thank you for all the support you have given us. The first semester ended a few days ago at our school and I have to say that it was a big challenge to organize the classes in the current circumstances. It was new for everyone, there were a lot of challenges that we had to adapt to. It was challenging, but we managed to complete the lessons without contamination among our students. Thanks to your organization, we have been able to bring joy into the homes of our students and show that they are not alone in this difficult time. Thanks again for everything everyone is doing for the children in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I wish you the best of luck.”

Since the beginning of this year, we have raised funds for the following initiatives:

  • Food parcels for 128 families
  • Lunch at school for 394 children (for school year 2021/2022)
  • School books for 6 children (for school year 2021/2022)

Food parcels
This year too, there is a great need for food parcels. Since the start of the pandemic, we have been supporting families of children living in poverty with food parcels at home. Thanks to your help, we have made the following deliveries:

  • 23 food parcels for primary school Kiseljak in Kiseljak
  • 22 food parcels for Srednje primary school in Ilijaš
  • 24 food parcels for Podorašje primary school in Srebrenik
  • 27 food parcels for Miroslav Krleza primary school in Zenica
  • 30 food parcels for primary school Zahid Barucija in Vogošca

Lunch at school
During the 2020/2021 school year, we supported 256 children with lunch at school. We have provided a daily lunch for:

  • 32 children at Podorašje primary school in Srebrenik
  • 42 children at Zahid Barucija primary school in Vogošca
  • 23 children at Izet Šabic primary school in Hotonj
  • 71 children at Musa Cazim Catic primary school in Zenica
  • 50 children at Mak Dizdar primary school in Zenica
  • 38 children at Miroslav Kreleza primary school in Zenica

In some schools, the lessons were given in combined groups. To reduce the risk of contamination, older children received online lessons, which ultimately resulted in fewer lunches being delivered. These lunches will be delivered in the new school year.

We are happy to report that we will be able to help even more children in the new year. With this year's fundraiser, we raised enough for 394 children. In consultation with the schools, we distribute these funds in August, so that delivery can start in September.

School books
In the current school year we have provided 30 children with school books. All textbooks have now been returned to the school library. In the new school year, these are again lent to the children who need them.
With the collected money we can provide 6 children with school books in the new school year. The need for textbooks is still very great. You can still participate in this initiative and thus contribute to the education of children growing up in poverty.

Thank you for supporting the children in Bosnia and Herzegovina! If you have any questions or comments, please contact us.

Sincerely,
Almasa, Alma, Alen and Ermina

Dear generous supporter,

Thanks to our generous community we are happy to announce that the first and second quarter of this year have been a great success.

So far, we have raised funds for the following initiatives:

  • Food parcels for 128 families (126 parcels, each worth €102, have been delivered to Bosnian families)
  • School lunches for 321 kids, for the entire school year (€70 per child)
  • School books for 5 kids (€100 per child)

With the schools being closed to limit the spread of Coronavirus, and people losing their jobs, children are facing food shortage at home. Therefore, we are focusing on collecting funds and sending food parcels to the kids and their families who are in need. Schools will select the families who need help and their suppliers take care of the distribution of the food parcels. We cover all the additional costs, so that 100% of your donation goes to the families.

The school lunches and school books will be distributed at the start of the new school year (September 2021). Thank you very much for supporting the children in need!

Should you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to contact us.

We wish you to stay healthy and safe.

Best regards,

Almasa, Alma, Alen & Ermina

Dear generous supporters,

What a year it has been! The year 2020 was an unprecedented one, full of  challenges and changes. Despite that, and thanks to your unwavering support, Charity Bosnian Kids was able to deliver on some significant results. We are eternally grateful for your support and for becoming a part of our global community. Your support made it possible for us to contribute to the realization of a carefree childhood for children across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What we have accomplished together

In 2020, we exceeded our fundraising goals by providing daily lunches for 256 children across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thanks to both corporate and individual donations, we managed to gather €54.165 in 2020. In line with our donations policy, 100% of each donation will go towards helping children and their families. This is one of our key principles and we aspire to guarantee that in the future.

Challenges and distribution of funds

As the pandemic evolved schools had to reorganize themselves by adopting to online teaching, which resulted in an obstacle for providing daily lunches to children. Following consultation with teachers and principals of the schools we work with, we decided to deliver food parcels with primary necessities. Thanks to your generous support and creating awareness through word-of-mouth, we managed to gather donations for 244 food parcels (each €102), of which, 221 were distributed to families across Bosnia. These food parcels did not only give relief to the parents, but also brought joy to the children.

“Unfortunately, as you can see for yourself, we have a lot of students who live in really difficult conditions. Distributing the food parcels was very emotional. They really made families happy, especially the children.” – Armin, principal of Elementary School Podorašje

New initiative

As our contact with the schools remained strong through the year, we also realized that another challenge Bosnian parents have to deal with, is the purchase of books and other school supplies at the beginning of the school year.

As soon as we realized that there was an opportunity for us to help, we decided to set up a pilot to see if we could do this in an effective and efficient way. With the help of Ikra Foundation, a charity located in the Netherlands, we gathered donations for the purchase of school necessities for 15 pupils from the Zahid Barucija elementary school. Thereafter we supplied school books for another 15 pupils from elementary school Podorašje. The books that are being used by these children will be returned to the school at the end of the school year, in order for other pupils to use them afterwards. We hope to continue this initiative during the school year of 2021/2022.

Fundraising for 2021/2022

Poverty is a massive national problem in Bosnia and Herzegovina that has negative short and long-term effects on the development of children. Our goal is to assist children and their families with the hope that it will provide some form of strength and foundation to their development.

We hope that with your help we will be able to contribute to a carefree childhood and a better progress in school of Bosnian children. For this reason, we have set ambitious goals for 2021:

  • Provide 600 pupils their daily lunch in school during the upcoming school year,
  • Distribute 300 food parcels with primary necessities to families.
  • Initiate new projects that focus on the education of children.

Should you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to contact us!

We wish you to stay healthy and safe!

Best regards,

Almasa, Alma, Alen & Ermina

Start of the new school year

The new school year has started. This is a very difficult time for many children and parents in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For families with two or more children, the cost of the school lunches and textbooks add up to more than their monthly income. The Coronavirus pandemic makes it even more challenging for these families.

This is how your donation makes a difference to these children and their parents:

More than € 20,000 in food packages

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we have been supporting Bosnian families with food parcels. During the pandemic, many parents have lost their only source of income, making it inevitable that children will experience food shortages at home. Thanks to the help of our philanthropists, we have collected 200 large food packages (each worth € 102), of which 194 food packages were delivered.

In order to make this a success, we have decided to work together with the schools. The school selects families who are in need of a food package and supervises the delivery.

256 children receive lunch at school every day

Our goal was to raise money for 300 children to finance school lunches during the 2020/2021 school year. With your help, we have achieved this goal before the start of the new school year. We want to thank all the people who contributed to this!

At the moment 256 children receive a daily lunch at these six primary schools:

  • Podorašje in Srebrenik (32 children)
  • Zahid Barucija in Vogošca (42 children)
  • Izet Šabic in Hotonj (23 children)
  • Musa Cazim Catic in Zenica (71 children)
  • Mak Dizdar in Zenica (50 children)
  • Miroslav Kreleza in Zenica (38 children)

The Coronavirus policy differs per school. For example, some schools to which we donate, have stopped school lunches. We still have room to help one or two other schools.

The fundraising for the next school year has started. For € 9 per month, one child receives lunch at school for a whole month.

School books for 30 children (new initiative)

The beginning of every school year is equally difficult for parents due to the great financial cost it brings to the family. Apart from the basics – such as school uniform, footwear and other school supplies – parents must pay a lot of money for textbooks. Government support for this is minimal, therefore parents are left to manage it themselves. To avoid excessive costs they often try to buy second hand textbooks. However, due to regular changes in publishers, parents are often left without this option either. Unfortunately this has a negative effect on the children: sometimes it takes weeks to get a hold of textbooks, so they have to find alternatives in order to learn, such as photocopying, borrowing or even copying text by hand during school breaks.

A large number of families in Bosnia live in poverty and cannot afford to buy school textbooks for their children. Your donations ensure those children will get access to the books they need, and 100% of what you give goes to this purpose only. Textbooks purchased through donations will become school property – once used by students, books are returned to the school at the end of the year for the next year to use.

Currently we have purchased textbooks for 30 children at two primary schools. With this initiative we hope to be able to help more children in the next school year.

Thank you for being a part of our journey, it means so much to have a supporter like you! If you have questions or suggestions be sure to reply to this email. We would love to hear from you.

Best regards,
Almasa, Alma, Ermina, Alen
