Dear generous supporters,

What a year it has been! The year 2020 was an unprecedented one, full of  challenges and changes. Despite that, and thanks to your unwavering support, Charity Bosnian Kids was able to deliver on some significant results. We are eternally grateful for your support and for becoming a part of our global community. Your support made it possible for us to contribute to the realization of a carefree childhood for children across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What we have accomplished together

In 2020, we exceeded our fundraising goals by providing daily lunches for 256 children across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thanks to both corporate and individual donations, we managed to gather €54.165 in 2020. In line with our donations policy, 100% of each donation will go towards helping children and their families. This is one of our key principles and we aspire to guarantee that in the future.

Challenges and distribution of funds

As the pandemic evolved schools had to reorganize themselves by adopting to online teaching, which resulted in an obstacle for providing daily lunches to children. Following consultation with teachers and principals of the schools we work with, we decided to deliver food parcels with primary necessities. Thanks to your generous support and creating awareness through word-of-mouth, we managed to gather donations for 244 food parcels (each €102), of which, 221 were distributed to families across Bosnia. These food parcels did not only give relief to the parents, but also brought joy to the children.

“Unfortunately, as you can see for yourself, we have a lot of students who live in really difficult conditions. Distributing the food parcels was very emotional. They really made families happy, especially the children.” – Armin, principal of Elementary School Podorašje

New initiative

As our contact with the schools remained strong through the year, we also realized that another challenge Bosnian parents have to deal with, is the purchase of books and other school supplies at the beginning of the school year.

As soon as we realized that there was an opportunity for us to help, we decided to set up a pilot to see if we could do this in an effective and efficient way. With the help of Ikra Foundation, a charity located in the Netherlands, we gathered donations for the purchase of school necessities for 15 pupils from the Zahid Barucija elementary school. Thereafter we supplied school books for another 15 pupils from elementary school Podorašje. The books that are being used by these children will be returned to the school at the end of the school year, in order for other pupils to use them afterwards. We hope to continue this initiative during the school year of 2021/2022.

Fundraising for 2021/2022

Poverty is a massive national problem in Bosnia and Herzegovina that has negative short and long-term effects on the development of children. Our goal is to assist children and their families with the hope that it will provide some form of strength and foundation to their development.

We hope that with your help we will be able to contribute to a carefree childhood and a better progress in school of Bosnian children. For this reason, we have set ambitious goals for 2021:

  • Provide 600 pupils their daily lunch in school during the upcoming school year,
  • Distribute 300 food parcels with primary necessities to families.
  • Initiate new projects that focus on the education of children.

Should you have any questions or remarks, please feel free to contact us!

We wish you to stay healthy and safe!

Best regards,

Almasa, Alma, Alen & Ermina

Start of the new school year

The new school year has started. This is a very difficult time for many children and parents in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For families with two or more children, the cost of the school lunches and textbooks add up to more than their monthly income. The Coronavirus pandemic makes it even more challenging for these families.

This is how your donation makes a difference to these children and their parents:

More than € 20,000 in food packages

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we have been supporting Bosnian families with food parcels. During the pandemic, many parents have lost their only source of income, making it inevitable that children will experience food shortages at home. Thanks to the help of our philanthropists, we have collected 200 large food packages (each worth € 102), of which 194 food packages were delivered.

In order to make this a success, we have decided to work together with the schools. The school selects families who are in need of a food package and supervises the delivery.

256 children receive lunch at school every day

Our goal was to raise money for 300 children to finance school lunches during the 2020/2021 school year. With your help, we have achieved this goal before the start of the new school year. We want to thank all the people who contributed to this!

At the moment 256 children receive a daily lunch at these six primary schools:

  • Podorašje in Srebrenik (32 children)
  • Zahid Barucija in Vogošca (42 children)
  • Izet Šabic in Hotonj (23 children)
  • Musa Cazim Catic in Zenica (71 children)
  • Mak Dizdar in Zenica (50 children)
  • Miroslav Kreleza in Zenica (38 children)

The Coronavirus policy differs per school. For example, some schools to which we donate, have stopped school lunches. We still have room to help one or two other schools.

The fundraising for the next school year has started. For € 9 per month, one child receives lunch at school for a whole month.

School books for 30 children (new initiative)

The beginning of every school year is equally difficult for parents due to the great financial cost it brings to the family. Apart from the basics – such as school uniform, footwear and other school supplies – parents must pay a lot of money for textbooks. Government support for this is minimal, therefore parents are left to manage it themselves. To avoid excessive costs they often try to buy second hand textbooks. However, due to regular changes in publishers, parents are often left without this option either. Unfortunately this has a negative effect on the children: sometimes it takes weeks to get a hold of textbooks, so they have to find alternatives in order to learn, such as photocopying, borrowing or even copying text by hand during school breaks.

A large number of families in Bosnia live in poverty and cannot afford to buy school textbooks for their children. Your donations ensure those children will get access to the books they need, and 100% of what you give goes to this purpose only. Textbooks purchased through donations will become school property – once used by students, books are returned to the school at the end of the year for the next year to use.

Currently we have purchased textbooks for 30 children at two primary schools. With this initiative we hope to be able to help more children in the next school year.

Thank you for being a part of our journey, it means so much to have a supporter like you! If you have questions or suggestions be sure to reply to this email. We would love to hear from you.

Dear wholehearted supporter,

We hope this e-mail finds you well. Thanks to your help, the last three months have been very significant. It was positively astonishing to experience the willingness of our community to reach out with a helping hand to those in need, especially during these difficult times. Thank you so much for your generous support thus far and we are happy we can share the results of the last three months with you.

Food parcel initiative

As we wrote to you last time, we started providing aid through distributing food parcels to families who are dealing with the consequences of the Coronacrisis. Together we managed to deliver a total amount of 173 food parcels! Families in Sarajevo, Vogošca, Bosanska Otoka and Zenica have been provided a food parcel with primary necessities worth €102. While distributing we found that these food parcels came just in time as they prevented a food shortage at home.

School lunches

Despite the impact we were able to make with you, dear supporter, our work is not done yet. As the new school year is approaching and it is expected that children will go back to school in September, we aspire to raise the remaining funds in order to be able to provide a daily lunch for 300 kids through the whole school year. Till now we raised funds for 250 children, so our goal for the upcoming month is to raise the remaining amount so no child is excluded from the daily lunch at school as from September.

How can you help?

  • Raise awareness by telling your friends and family about our cause
  • Share our posts through social media
  • Donate an amount of your own choice. €9 can provide a child a daily lunch in school for a whole month and €70 for a whole school year.

Thank you for being a part of our journey, it means so much to have a supporter like you! If you have questions or suggestions be sure to send me an e-mail. I would love to hear from you.

Best regards,

Almasa

Dear wholehearted supporters,

We hope you are healthy and safe during these uncertain times. It cannot be put into words how grateful we are for your donations and support over the last time. You are on our minds.

Since we started fundraising for the upcoming school year 2020/21 there have been certain developments we would like to inform you about: Up till now, we collected funds that will make us able to provide 90 children of a daily lunch as from the upcoming school year! This is a great accomplishment, and we will continue with our fundraising campaign in order to reach our goal to make this possible for 300 children.

Thanks to your support last year, 149 children were secured of a daily lunch for this school year. Yet as children are currently following classes remotely online, we will make it possible for parents of children who receive our support to get one bread instead of a school lunch.

However, one bread per day is not enough. Therefore we are going to send food packages to Bosnian families in need. Schools select the families who need help, their suppliers take care of the distribution. Read more about it here. We cover all the additional costs, so that 100% of the donations go to the families.

Our belief in the power of our community gets proven every day. Through sharing our initiative with your family and friends you can help us making a greater impact. Make sure you follow us on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn to stay updated in the meantime!

In case you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Stay safe!

Best regards,

Almasa

To all our supporters, we want to wish a joyful, healthy and happy 2020!

We are grateful for the developments in 2019 and the impact we were able to make. In this report we want to outline what we have accomplished together! Charity Bosnian Kids is officially operating since May 2018, and 2019 was the first time we were able to see the results of a whole year.

In financial terms, during 2019 we were able to generate an income of €12.500. This income was mostly generated through donations, both corporate and individual. As we guaranteed then, and will do in the future, 100% of the donations will go to the children.

In previous updates we announced that we were providing meals for 84 children from 2 different schools. From last October till the end of the year, we found 2 more schools to collaborate with. This left us supporting 149 kids for the school year of 2019/2020, we consider this as a great accomplishment!

To give an overview, children from the following schools received our financial aid in 2019:

  • Elementary school "Otoka", in Bosanska Otoka (42 kids)
  • Elementary school "Zahid Barucija" in Vogošca (42 kids)
  • Elementary school ‘’Vrhbosna’’ in Sarajevo (15 kids)
  • Elementary school ‘’Musa Cazim Catic’’ in Zenica (50 kids)

Elementary school ‘’Vrhbosna’’ Sarajevo

We visited this school recently and were welcomed warmly by the principle. There were 15 children in need for financial aid in the second half of the school year and we were happy to provide for that. At the same time, the principle explained that 6 of those children are situated almost in extreme poverty, which is why we provided food packages worth €154 each for those families through the supplier of the school. This is something we haven’t done before, but in this way we stick to the core of our charity that focuses on providing food for children.

Through this school we came into contact with elementary school ‘’Musa Cazim Catic’’ in Zenica, where 50 children were excluded from the lunch at school. We made a donation that makes it possible for them to join the lunch after the winter break until the end of the school year.

The payments that have been made, guarantee daily meals in school until the end of the school year of 2019/2020. For the new year, we have set several objectives in order to grow and help even more children in need:

School searching for collaboration

One of our objectives this year was to provide daily meals for at least 300 children. Due to difficulties in finding schools to collaborate with, this ended up being a harder task than expected. With learning from this experience and broadening our network, we were able to collaborate with more schools after all. The objective for 2020 is to find more schools and providing more financial aid.

Fundraising for 2020/2021

After a successful 2019, we aspire to continue with our work and provide financial aid for more kids in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In order to expand our impact and reach, fundraising is going to be a main objective for the upcoming year. It is possible to make a donation (either one-time only or recurrent) through our Global Giving project or official website.

Raising awareness

As stated many times already, we believe in making impact together, not only through donations but also by raising awareness. For that reason, we kindly ask you keep sharing our project with relatives and friends so we can raise awareness for this issue and let our community grow!

We would like to thank you so much for your support this year, and we hope you will stick around with us a little more. Make sure you follow us on our social media channels like Facebook and Instagram to stay updated.

May you have any questions or comments regarding our project, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be happy to join in a conversation.

Best regards,

Almasa
