Voices from the waves!

By Amna Hassan Kazmi | CEO

From September to November, Alif Laila dedicated its efforts to promoting reading and learning among children through its Boat Libraries and Hamara Kutab Khana initiatives. These programs were thoughtfully aligned with educational themes that engaged young learners in reading and writing activities, significantly enhancing their learning experiences. The Boat Libraries continued to serve children in areas like Basti Hagi Rasheed, Basti Wahid Buksh, Basti Chawali, Sanghar (Village Phulail), Village Yousaf Mallah, and Village Paryal Amallah. Over three months, approximately 900 children benefited from the educational activities conducted in these regions. Despite facing logistical challenges, particularly in the aftermath of flooding, the librarians showed remarkable dedication and resilience. They ensured that reading and writing activities continued without interruption, providing much-needed stability and support for the children. Meanwhile, the Hamara Kutab Khana initiative, based in Sukkur and Jamshoro, served around 3000 children per month, with 30 kids attending regularly for their reading and writing activities. Trained teachers utilized a combination of video lessons and hands-on teaching methods to create a dynamic and effective learning environment. The children were taught basic literacy skills, with additional support provided through placards, games, puzzles, and visual resources. This blend of learning tools proved to be highly effective in engaging students and improving their literacy levels. The success of these initiatives was made possible by the unwavering efforts of the librarians, teachers, and volunteers. The active participation from children across all regions demonstrated a significant interest in continuing their educational activities. In total, approximately 3900 children, including those from the Boat Libraries and Hamara Kutab Khana, benefitted from these programs. Children who participated shared their appreciation and joy in these learning spaces. One child from Basti Hagi Rasheed commented, "I love coming to the boat library. It helps me learn new things every day, and I feel proud when I can read a story to my friends." Another child from Sukkur added, "The games and videos make learning so much fun! I never thought reading could be this exciting." Alif Laila’s initiatives have made a lasting impact on children's education, particularly in rural and flood-affected areas. With continued support and efforts, we aim to expand the reach of these programs and provide even more opportunities for children to learn, grow, and explore new possibilities.
