Civic Force launched NPO Partner Projects in the areas affected by the West Japan Floods in August 2018. While the projects have supported recovery efforts through 7 organizations in 3 prefectures, the journey to full recovery has just begun. Your continuous support is greatly appreciated.
Hichiku Volunteer Center: Post-Disaster Recovery Event being held in Uwajima-shi, March 2019
Hichiku Volunteer Center based in Uwajima-shi, Ehime Prefecture, participated in a reflection meeting held by the Uwajima Disaster Volunteer Center and shared their assistance activities and disaster preparedness plans moving forward. Hichiku Volunteer Center, in cooperation with a local CSO, held a mobile hot spring event and supported local farmers. At the end of March, Hichiku Volunteer Center is planning on holding a post-disaster recovery event and monitoring trip to Kyushu to visit the areas affected by the Northern Kyushu Flood in 2017.
Disaster Area NGO Collaboration Center: Supporting Community Mutual Assistance Efforts
Although the lives of flood victims have settled after moving into temporary housing, the number of people suffering from insomnia and other physical ailments is on the rise. The Disaster Area NGO Collaboration Center is providing self-care activities such as foot baths and haircuts. Moving forward, building on their experience from the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995, the Center is planning on managing community mutual assistance efforts and providing disaster recovery lectures.
Soru Home Visiting Nurse Station: 3/31 DRR Workshop in Anticipation of Summer Weather Disasters
Soru Home Visiting Nurse Station continues their activities based out of a temporary trailer office provided by Civic Force. Once or twice a month, they provide communal spaces where community residents can gather and host community events such as a communal café and health check-ups. The Station is also working on disaster preparedness in anticipation of the rainy season this year and planning on hosting a DRR workshop on March 24.
Okayama Mind “Kokoro” 3/30 “Mutual-Assistance Center Mabi” Launch Event
Okayama Mind “Kokoro” is an NPO working on mid to long-term recovery efforts in Mabi-cho, Okayama Prefecture. Kokoro hosts meetings for a local networking group, community re-building activities, and music events every month. In November, “Mutual-Assistance Center Mabi” opened its door to meet the needs of the community residents such as consultation services and car pick-up services. On March 30, they plan to host a kick-up event to commemorate its establishment.
Arts and Sports for Everyone (ASE): Bringing the experience of Kumamoto Earthquake for Boccia Event
ASE envisions a society where everyone can enjoy arts and sports together regardless of their disabilities. ASE has hosted Boccia* events in Kumamoto Prefectures after the earthquake in 2017 and began needs assessments for similar activities in the disaster affected areas in Hiroshima and Okayama Prefectures.
*Boccia is practiced by people with severe cerebral palsy or no limb function. It is one of the competitive sports in the Paralympic Games.
