In the first quarter of 2025, South Africa recorded 103 rhino poaching incidents, averaging over one rhino killed per day. While this represents a slight decrease from the 2024 monthly average, the persistence of poaching underscores the ongoing threat to rhino populations. Enviro Crime Solutions (ECS) has continued its commitment to combating this crisis through advanced forensic investigations, contributing to significant arrests and prosecutions.
Between January and March 2025, 103 rhinos were poached in South Africa. The distribution of incidents is as follows:
South African National Parks (SANParks): 65 rhinos
KwaZulu-Natal: 16 rhinos
Limpopo: 10 rhinos
Free State: 5 rhinos
North West: 4 rhinos
Mpumalanga: 3 rhinos
Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Gauteng: 0 rhinos
The absence of poaching in four provinces indicates the effectiveness of targeted interventions and collaborative efforts.
Collaborative efforts have led to notable legal actions:
Arrests: 15 individuals were arrested for rhino poaching-related offenses in Q1 2025.
Prosecutions: Five cases were finalized, resulting in convictions and substantial sentences, including a 27-year sentence for a Mozambican poaching kingpin.
Despite successes, challenges persist:
Syndicate Adaptation: Poaching syndicates have shifted tactics, targeting dehorned rhinos and exploiting new areas.
Resource Limitations: Some regions face constraints in personnel and equipment, hindering rapid response capabilities.
ECS is addressing these challenges by:
Enhancing Surveillance: Implementing drone technology and thermal imaging to monitor high-risk areas.
Community Engagement: Working with local communities to foster conservation awareness and alternative livelihoods
