A Safe Place During the School Holidays

By Ricci Boonzaaier | Project leader

When school closes for the holidays, many children look forward to a break filled with fun, friends and family time. But for some of the children we support in Soweto, the holidays can also mean uncertainty about where their next meal will come from.

That is why our holiday programme is so important.

Throughout the school holidays, children continue coming to our centre, where they are welcomed into a safe and caring environment. They take part in activities, spend time with their friends and, most importantly, receive a nutritious meal.

For some of these children, the meal they receive at the centre may be the only proper meal they have that day.

A plate of nutritious food can mean so much more than simply filling a hungry stomach. It gives a child energy to play, learn and participate. It provides comfort and routine during a time when the normal structure of school is missing.

But our centre provides something else that is just as important: a place where children feel safe and protected.

They know the familiar faces of the staff who welcome them. They know they have somewhere to go, people who care about them and a place where they can simply be children.

During the holidays, the centre becomes a place of laughter, friendship, activities and belonging. Children can spend their days in an environment where they are cared for, encouraged and protected, rather than facing the uncertainty that can come when school is closed.

Your support helps make this possible for 150 children in Soweto.

Every nutritious meal you help provide is an investment in a child's wellbeing. Every day of the holiday programme gives children a safe place to go. And every act of kindness reminds them that they are seen, valued and cared for.

For a child who may not know where their next meal is coming from, your support can provide something incredibly important: a meal, a safe place and the reassurance that someone cares.

Thank you for helping us keep the doors open and the tables filled, especially during the school holidays when these children need us most.
