Feed 900 disadvantaged students in Mozambique

Since the last report, we have received donation of 113.91 dollars (USD) through GlobalGiving, equivalent to 7,272.40 meticais (MZN). With this contribution we will only buy salt (1 T). This quantity will enough for restocking in preparing for the new school year.

By buying food, we have guaranteed the permanence of more than 900 students at our boarding schools in the districts of Búzi, Chibabava and Machanga. Between November 2023 until the end of January, we sent food to the boarding schools once, because the students were on holidays between December and end of January. The new school year, started on the 1st of February. We sent 16.800kg of Maize - 453,600 MZN equivalent to 7,101.29 (USD); 2.400kg of Beans - 240,000 MZN equivalent to 3,756.95 USD, 680kg of Sugar - 58,822 MZN equivalent to 921.09 USD; 680L of Oil - 77,350 MZN equivalent to 1,205.50 USD, 500kg Salt (3. 500 MZN equivalent to 54.46 USD); and for transport of the products from Chimoio to Estaquinha and to the 4 missions 86,937.05 MZN were spent equivalent to 1,352.82 USD. The total of costs was of is 920,209.05 MZN equivalent to 14,329.12 USD. These amounts are enough to feed 911 students in 1 month, guaranteeing the 3 main meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). It should be noted that quantities vary according to existing stock. 

 The number of students has reduced in 2023 because food costs have been exponentially increasing due to inflation. ESMABAMA makes a huge effort to guarantee meals for these students as it is the only way students from vulnerable backgrounds will be able to continue studying.

We manage 12 boarding schools with over 900 students in the south of Sofala province. These are students who come from very distant regions, where there are no schools to continue their studies. This means that the student's regions of origin have no opportunities - usually after the primary school, from 6^th grade onwards. That's why, through the boarding schools, these students have the chance to continue studying at ESMABAMA schools, where they also have a place to stay. To do this, ESMABAMA spends around 500,000 Meticais (MZN) = 7,825.53 dollars (USD) each month to buy maize, 530,000 MZN = 8,295.07 USD for beans, 250.000 MZN = 3,912.77 USD for cooking oil, 150,500 MZN = 2,355.49 USD for sugar, and 6000 MZN = 93.91USD for the purchase of salt, totaling 1,436,500 MZN corresponding to 22,482.76 USD total costs per month.

For this project, we received 72.60 USD from GlobalGiving between March and September. And with this amount, which has not yet been disbursed, we will be able to use it to buy salt for the students in one of the following months.

Without ESMABAMA's boarding schools, many students give up their studies to pursue other activities and others marry prematurely, leaving their dreams behind. By providing food, we are also providing the "fuel" that enables the students to have the energy to pay attention in class and dedicate themselves to the studies.
