Food for the Body and the Spirit

By Mary Lou Hofmann | CAA Board of Directors

Funcavida (Quality of Life Foundation for Cancer Patients) is a non-profit organization in San Ramón that works with cancer patients/survivors and their families to offer multi-dimensional support for their journey thru the disease and their re-entry into everyday living.

Food insecurity is a common problem for many people in the local area. And while having adequate food to eat as well as food that is both healthful and nutritious is important to everyone’s well-being, it is particularly important to those individuals in cancer treatment and/or recovery. As a result of their disease, cancer patients/survivors often have special food challenges to be addressed. Those in treatment or recovery may no longer be able to work and consequently, their ability to purchase the food they might need to maintain/regain their health is diminished. Likewise, the more nutritious or specialized foods they may need can be very expensive or not readily available. And for those with diminished energy, the effort required to prepare meals may be overwhelming.

Activities to address some of these challenges are woven into Funcavida’s multi-dimensional support program. Funcavida has an onsite kitchen where their staff, based on the advice of volunteer nutrition professionals, prepares and serves on a daily basis nutritious meals and snacks for their cancer patients/survivors and their families in need. In addition, nutritious snacks are available to those adults who attend the education program offered to help participants acquire the skills needed to enter/re-enter the work force post treatment. And for those patients and their families who have been identified to have special needs due to their treatment status, Funcavida offers a monthly food delivery program.

While Funcavida recognizes the importance of food for the body for those dealing with cancer, they also recognize the importance of food for the spirit. Incorporated into their program are opportunities for emotional and psychological support, creative activities and practices, social integration through volunteerism, and care and connection to others who are sharing a similar journey. Volunteers from CAA make a valuable contribution to the process as well when they visit on a monthly basis to provide free Thai Chi classes to facilitate health and well-being and pet therapy visits to provide connection and comfort to participants and to the staff as well.

Based on the generosity of CAA members and friends, we have been able to provide financial assistance on a monthly basis to help support Funcavida’s food resource budget. While they have access to the Costa Rican Food Bank program for basic foods, there is a charge for participation in the program and some high-nutrient foods that are needed are not always available or in short supply. Consequently, the monthly funds that CAA is providing to Funcavida are most welcomed and appreciated as they strive to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families.

We gratefully express our sincere thanks to CAA members and friends for your ongoing generosity and commitment.
