The Community Action Alliance of Costa Rica (CAA) in San Ramon, is a group of expats and Costa Ricans who are committed to helping families who face the stark reality of being hungry every day. While there are local non-profit organizations whose mission is to help, the need is great and additional support from the local community is critically important to address the issue of hungry families.
According to a national survey, 23% of households live in poverty and approximately 6.3 % live in extreme poverty, meaning they cannot meet their basic food needs. While there are local non-profit organizations whose mission is to help address the many issues of poverty, they often have minimal or limited resources to adequately address their clients' food security challenges. Additional community support is critically needed and CAA is committed to helping.
CAA provides monthly food assistance to women in need who are part of a women's empowerment program that helps them move from poverty to self-sufficiency. Our goal is to provide monthly food support for one year for the equivalent of 15 women and their families. CAA also provides funds to a neighborhood of impoverished migrant and immigrant women to help them continue the much-loved and time-honored cultural tradition of making and giving tamales to family and friends at Christmas.
The majority of the CAA membership are expats, either full-time or part-time residents of Costa Rica. We have come to know and love our Costa Rican neighbors. Our goal is to continue to understand the needs of the community and to rally our own financial, creative, and time resources to make a difference. We would love you to join us in our efforts. By working together, we can expand our efforts to relieve the impact of poverty and hunger for those in need.
