Water Scarcity Deepens Hunger in Karamoja

By Othieno Gerald | Project Leader

Water scarcity is intensifying the challenges facing communities across Karamoja. Prolonged dry spells and inadequate rainfall can reduce water availability for household use, agriculture, and livestock. When water sources become unreliable, families face additional difficulties maintaining their livelihoods and producing sufficient food.

For farming households, inadequate rainfall can lead to crop failure and reduced harvests. Pastoralist communities may also experience declining pasture and increased pressure on livestock. These interconnected challenges can reduce household income and make it harder for families to afford food in local markets.

The worsening situation is reflected in the September 2026 IPC assessment, which estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse.

The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on donors, development partners, and humanitarian organizations to help strengthen the response to this emergency. Alongside immediate food assistance, sustainable water access and climate-resilient livelihoods are important for reducing vulnerability to future droughts.

Through GlobalGiving, we invite supporters to stand with Karamoja's communities and help bring greater attention to their needs.

Water, food, and hope are essential to human dignity. Together, we can help communities work toward a more secure future despite the challenges of prolonged drought.
