Malnutrition is one of the most serious concerns arising from Karamoja's worsening hunger crisis. Prolonged drought and crop failure have reduced food availability, while limited household purchasing power makes it difficult for many families to obtain diverse and nutritious meals. Young children are particularly vulnerable when their nutritional needs cannot be met consistently.
Figures cited in the September 2026 IPC assessment indicate that approximately 154,200 children under five in Karamoja are affected by or expected to experience acute malnutrition during the assessment's projection period. Kotido and Kaabong have also been identified as districts facing Critical acute malnutrition conditions.
These findings highlight the importance of early identification, appropriate treatment, and sustained nutrition support for affected children. Families also need improved access to sufficient food to reduce the pressures contributing to malnutrition.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on humanitarian organizations, health partners, donors, and compassionate individuals to help strengthen awareness and support for vulnerable communities.
Through GlobalGiving, we encourage supporters to contribute to appropriate relief initiatives that help address food insecurity and nutritional vulnerability.
Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy. Together, we can help bring greater attention to malnutrition in Karamoja and support efforts to protect children from the lasting effects of hunger.
