Drought and Hunger Threaten Karamoja
Prolonged drought is placing enormous pressure on families across Karamoja, northeastern Uganda. Repeated dry spells and below-average rainfall have damaged crops, reduced food availability, and weakened the livelihoods of households that depend on farming and livestock. For many families, the loss of harvests means fewer meals and fewer resources to purchase food from local markets.
The September 2026 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were facing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This alarming situation highlights the urgent need to support vulnerable communities before their circumstances deteriorate further.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is calling on donors, humanitarian organizations, businesses, and compassionate individuals to help raise awareness and mobilize support for families affected by hunger. Children, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and low-income households are particularly vulnerable when nutritious food becomes difficult to obtain.
Through GlobalGiving, we invite supporters to stand with the people of Karamoja and contribute to efforts addressing emergency food needs and longer-term resilience.
Together, we can help families overcome the effects of drought and give vulnerable children renewed hope for a healthier future.
