Families across Karamoja are facing growing difficulties obtaining sufficient food as prolonged drought and crop losses undermine their livelihoods. For households that depend on seasonal harvests, failed crops can leave food stores depleted long before families have the resources to purchase replacements. Rising food costs further complicate the struggle for households already living with limited incomes.
The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja were facing IPC Phase 3 or higher food insecurity. This deterioration highlights the importance of a coordinated humanitarian response that prioritizes vulnerable households and communities facing the greatest challenges.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is appealing to international donors, businesses, philanthropic organizations, and individuals to help raise awareness and support efforts addressing hunger in the region.
Emergency food assistance can help households meet immediate needs, while nutrition services are essential for children and other people at risk of malnutrition. Longer-term support for water access and drought-resilient agriculture can also help communities prepare for future climatic shocks.
Through GlobalGiving, we invite compassionate supporters to join the call for urgent action.
No family should be forgotten because drought has destroyed its harvest. Stand with Karamoja and help bring hope to households struggling to put food on the table.
