This report shares an update on Conservation Through Public Health’s (CTPH) GlobalGiving project “Family Planning Services in Bwindi” (#67801). Our last report was published in June 2025 when $860 had been raised. To date, the project has raised $1,560 toward the $50,000 goal.
Why This Project Matters
Families living near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) face many challenges, including poverty, large family sizes, and limited access to health services. Across Uganda, only about 30% of women were using modern family planning methods in 2020. In remote areas like Bwindi, access is often even lower.
CTPH works directly with these communities to bring voluntary family planning services to people’s homes, using trained community volunteers; the Village Health and Conservation teams (VHCTs). This helps families plan better, improves health, and reduces pressure on the forest and wildlife.
What Has Changed
More Families Are Choosing Family Planning
The number of households using family planning services has steadily increased over the past four years:
Today, about 5,400 families, more than half of all households in the eight frontline parishes are using family planning services. This is well above the national average and shows strong community trust in the program.
Even with limited supplies and difficult terrain, families continue to choose family planning because they see real benefits in their daily lives including the ability to adopt the CTPH model household standard. As of now, 63% of households around Bwindi haveearned a Green status (Model households) demonstrating adoption of key one health performance indicators which include proper sanitation and hygiene, improved livelihoods and good conservation practices.
How This Progress Was Achieved
In the previous reporting period, CTPH trained 430 VHCT members, more than half of whom were women. These volunteers serve 59 villages around Bwindi and are trusted members of their communities.
The training strengthened their skills in:
Tackling the Biggest Challenge:
Limited family planning supplies remains the biggest challenge around Bwindi communities despite the desire by most women to adopt family planning. To address this, in addition to the funds collected from this campaign, CTPH is now finalizing a partnership agreement with Reproductive Health Uganda (RHU). This collaboration will help improve access to reliable family planning supplies and ensure that the growing demand in these communities can be met consistently.
We sincerely appreciate your unwavering support for this project. Your contributions play a crucial role in its success, and we want you to know that your generosity makes a significant impact. Together, we can achieve remarkable results and create positive change. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey!
