Summary

Bwindi's endangered mountain gorillas, their habitat and other wildlife are under major threat from rapid population growth, fueled in part by a lack of access to, and availability of, appropriate voluntary family planning. This project will support increased access to, and availability of, family planning, to meet the current high unmet demand, by equipping community volunteers with appropriate skills and tools to make family planning available in homes, enabling informed decision making.

Challenge

High unmet need for family planning and high population growth lead to increased poverty and fuel increased threats to Bwindi's biodiversity, through habitat encroachment, competition for resources and increased risk of disease spread. Household poverty is also closely linked with increased poaching. Currently, people are not able to access the family planning tools and services they need in part due to limited information, long distances, poor infrastructure and associated high costs.

Solution

This project will engage existing community volunteers, called Village Health and Conservation Teams, training them and providing them with the skills and tools needed to offer effective, appropriate and needed voluntary family planning services and information in community members' households, helping to bridge the supply gap and realize people's right to appropriate family planning whilst also addressing key threats to the endangered mountain gorillas, their habitat and other wildlife.

Long-Term Impact

Your support will help to ensure survival of 43% of the World's remaining mountain gorillas, as well as supporting improved health and wellbeing, and reduced poverty, amongst some of the most impoverished communities in Uganda, with very limited access to even the most basic health services. Your support will help to ensure people's rights to control their reproductive health are met. The long-term impacts at the individual, household, community and conservation level are all enormous.
