Care Without the Financial Barrier

Karin Community Initiative Uganda (KCIU) continues to expand access to affordable healthcare for underserved communities in Northern Uganda through Community Health Insurance (CHI), community outreach and health education. Since the introduction of CHI, approximately 400 community members across six community groups have enrolled. During this reporting period, KCIU conducted more than 50 outreach activities across 12 villages, reaching over 600 community members with consultations, malaria and HIV testing, STI and typhoid screening, blood pressure checks, health education, referrals, and linkage to continued care. These activities have brought essential healthcare closer to families who often face financial and geographical barriers to accessing services.

One of the important changes we are seeing is increased confidence in seeking healthcare early. Previously, limited household income often resulted in self-medication, delayed treatment or incomplete treatment. Through CHI, community members are gaining an opportunity to plan for healthcare costs and access services when they need them. VHTs, community leaders and volunteers have also been instrumental in mobilizing communities, providing health information, supporting referrals and encouraging CHI enrollment.

A mother of several children shared how difficult it had been to manage healthcare costs because her children frequently became sick. Previously, each illness brought uncertainty about whether she would have enough money for consultation, tests and medicines, sometimes causing her to delay seeking care because of fear of a high bill. With CHI, she now feels confident that when her children fall sick, they can receive the care they need early and satisfactorily without the same financial barrier or fear of an unaffordable bill. For her, CHI means greater peace of mind and the confidence to seek healthcare when it is needed rather than waiting until illness becomes more serious.

While progress has been encouraging, sustainability remains an important challenge. KCIU continues to strengthen medicine availability, community outreach, volunteer support, and the systems required to manage CHI effectively. The support of GlobalGiving donors is helping KCIU build on this progress—bringing affordable healthcare closer to more families, strengthening community-based health financing, and helping ensure that families can seek quality care early without the fear of unaffordable healthcare costs.
