Expanding Access through Community Insurance

By Hope Okeny | Project Leader

We are thrilled to share the progress of our Community Health Insurance scheme. Our goal is simple: to ensure that healthcare is a right, not a luxury. By transitioning from a pay-as-you-go model to a collective insurance system, we are protecting families from the devastating costs of unexpected illness.

Currently, we have successfully enrolled all of our facility staff and their families. This ensures that the very people providing care are also protected, granting them access to essential services including:

  • Preventative Care: Vision and dental screenings, and basic laboratory testing.
  • Maternal Health: Comprehensive antenatal care and free delivery services for all registered members.

Community Outreach: The "God is Able" Group

Our team has spent the past few weeks on the ground, engaging with local communities to scale this impact. One inspiring example is the family of Musa Aywee, members of a community group named "God is Able." While Musa’s family is eager to join, our model requires a minimum of 20 members per group to ensure the fund remains sustainable and financially viable. We are currently working closely with "God is Able" to help them reach this threshold. Once the group is fully enrolled and premiums are settled, they will immediately begin benefiting from full coverage.

How the Model Works: Sustainability & Accountability

To maintain a high standard of care and prevent system abuse, our insurance operates on a clear, structured framework:

  • Quarterly Enrollment: New groups join during the final week of each quarter (between the 22nd and 26th of the month) to ensure seamless administration.
  • Affordable Premiums: Members contribute a minimum of 15,000 UGX per quarter.
  • Co-pay System: To encourage responsible facility use, members pay a small co-pay of 2,000 UGX per outpatient visit. For admissions, a co-pay of 5,000 UGX per day is required.
  • Partnership: A formal agreement is signed between the health provider and the group, fostering a relationship of mutual trust.

Impact and Looking Ahead

Beyond treatment, this program emphasizes prevention. Our healthcare providers regularly visit these insured groups to offer free health screenings and education on preventing avoidable diseases.

We are proud to announce that we now have 346 active members under the scheme. This growth is a direct result of your support, which allows us to provide the administrative backbone for this life-saving program.

Thank you for standing with us as we build a healthier, more resilient community.
