Introduction
The Balochistan Rural Development Program (BRDP) initiated the project titled “Establishment of Animal Sanctuary in Quetta” in response to the growing concerns regarding animal welfare in District Quetta. The project is currently active on the GlobalGiving online fundraising platform and seeks to establish a structured, humane, and sustainable system for the protection, rehabilitation, and long-term care of stray and abandoned animals.
This report provides an overview of the project’s rationale, objectives, progress to date, and anticipated long-term impact.
Problem Statement
Across many parts of Asia, including Pakistan, animal welfare remains a significantly under-addressed issue. In the absence of strong enforcement of animal protection laws and institutional mechanisms, animals particularly stray and working animals are subjected to systemic neglect and abuse.
In District Quetta, the situation is particularly alarming. Stray dogs and cats face routine violence, starvation, and disease. Working animals such as donkeys, horses, and cattle are frequently overburdened, malnourished, and denied basic veterinary care. Additionally, injured and abandoned animals have virtually no access to organized rescue or rehabilitation services.
Key challenges identified include:
Project Objective
The primary objective of the project is to establish a fully functional animal sanctuary in District Quetta that provides a safe, humane, and sustainable environment for stray, abandoned, injured, and rescued animals.
Specific objectives include:
Project Strategy and Approach
The project is designed in alignment with internationally recognized animal welfare standards, particularly those promoted by the World Organisation for Animal Health. BRDP aims to ensure that animals under its care are provided with:
The project will also incorporate mobile rescue units to respond to emergencies and transport injured animals to the sanctuary for treatment and recovery.
Progress and Current Status
The project is currently in the fundraising phase and is hosted on the GlobalGiving platform.
BRDP continues to engage with donors, partners, and stakeholders to mobilize the required financial resources for the successful execution of the project.
Expected Outcomes
Upon successful implementation, the project is expected to achieve the following outcomes:
Long-Term Impact
The long-term vision of the project extends beyond immediate animal rescue and care. It aims to institutionalize a culture of compassion, responsibility, and ethical treatment of animals within the community.
Key long-term impacts include:
The sanctuary will ensure that all animals receive dignified care, including proper shelter, feeding, medical treatment, and protection from environmental hazards.
Conclusion
The Establishment of Animal Sanctuary in Quetta represents a critical and timely intervention in addressing the longstanding neglect of animal welfare in the region. While the project is still in its fundraising phase, it reflects BRDP’s commitment to humane development and social responsibility.
With sustained support from donors and stakeholders, this initiative has the potential to transform the landscape of animal welfare in Quetta and serve as a model for broader regional and national replication.
