Stand with Eritrean Girls

By Elisa Cappai | Junior Project Manager

Dear Donors,

in this dark period for Eritrea, we need your help. This country continues to oppress its citizens’ fundamental rights, including freedom of opinion, religion and expression. Eritrean security forces continue to commit serious rights violations, including widespread sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, and preventing humanitarian aid from reaching areas under their control. Despite being a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Eritrea consistently refuses to cooperate with key UN and African Union (AU) mechanisms, including by denying access to information on the human rights situation in the country.

Eritrea continues to demonstrate complicity in the use of forced child labor and the recruitment of minors into the military program. Eritrean children are often forced into agricultural work as there are no protections regarding the minimum age of minors working outside of formal employment relationships. Furthermore, the laws do not condemn or prohibit prostitution and the use of minors in illicit activities or for pornographic purposes.

Within this challenging context, we are committed to improving the well-being of 45 orphan girls between 6 and 17 years old hosted in the foster home "Casa Foca" in Keren. Our local partner, the Congregation of the Daughters of Saint Anne, takes care of the girls daily, providing their nutrition, education and health. Furthermore, due to poor economic conditions, clothes and school materials are distributed within the center. Our intervention also extends to organizing educational and recreational activities for girls, aimed not only at ensuring quality education but also at promoting their personal development. We firmly believe that a stable and loving environment can make a difference in their growth path, providing them with the tools necessary to build a better future. We are also working to strengthen the infrastructure of the foster home, ensuring the maintenance of the building.

Your support is crucial to continuing this vital work. Thanks for your help!
