At CasaSito, we believe that the school grades that our scholars earn are important, but personal and professional success depends on much more, especially critical thinking, talent development, and emotional support, all lacking in Guatemalan schools. That is why we have developed our enrichment clubs (art, theater, debate, math, English, music, writing, volunteering) and workshops for the scholars and their families. Money is needed for transportation, materials, teacher stipends, etc.
Because of the rote teaching methods applied in the Guatemalan educational system, students graduate without basic skills ranging from critical thinking to math and logic. The lack of fundamental teaching skills is evidenced by the fact that 96% of students fail the math exam for entry into the public university. In addition, creative skills development is sorely lacking, with scant opportunities for expression in art, writing, drama, or music.
Our enrichment clubs and workshops address the problem by providing students a safe and secure place with adult supervision where they can get help with their homework, learn good study habits, and have opportunities to engage in other learning activities that promote creative and critical thinking skills. All scholars are required to participate in three clubs during the school year. We strive to make the experience meaningful by publishing student products and offering learning excursions.
CasaSito's mission is to create opportunities for Guatemalan youth to achieve their academic, personal and professional potential, so that they can transform their future. The clubs and workshops are a core component of our strategy. With a heavy focus on rural populations and girls, we hope to transform families and communities (85 families in 35 communities in 2019).
