This project aims to empower 400 adolescent girls and young women in one year by closing HIV knowledge gap in order to reduce risk through youth friendly reproductive healthcare and rights education. It will include access to contraception, HIV screening, testing and counseling and enhancing HIV prevention technologies besides condom use and abstinence.For example access to and use of Post-exposure prophylaxis and pre-exposure prophylaxis in sexually active adolescents and young partners.
Adolescent girls and young women bearing the brunt of the HIV epidemic due to limited access to information, services, stigma and discrimination. Kenya HIV estimates put approximately 29% of all new HIV infections among adolescents and young people (age 15-29) according National Syndemic Disease Control Council. AIDS is the leading cause of death and morbidity among adolescents and young people in Kenya: In 2021 the country lost 2257 adolescents to HIV/AIDs attributing it to low diagnosis.
This project will provide comprehensive education on effective prevention methods, including safe sexual practices, the use of barrier protection, and the importance of regular HIV testing, empowering adolescents to make informed decisions and take proactive steps to protect themselves from contracting the virus.It will also offer opportunities for them to access resources and support from local healthcare providers and organizations specializing in HIV/AIDS prevention. care and treatment.
It is envisaged that the overall project performance will lead to increased HIV testing and antiretroviral therapy among adolescents and young women. Further, the project is expected to cover considerable gaps in comprehensive basic knowledge on HIV prevention among adolescent girls and young women and trigger a positive behavior change on access and use of HIV prevention technologies, hence reduced rate of new infections and transmission.
