This project will help end open defecation in rural Ghana by improving access to sanitation facilities, hygiene education, and community-led sanitation programs. Many rural communities lack safe toilets and proper sanitation infrastructure, forcing families to practice open defecation, which contributes to disease outbreaks and environmental contamination. This project will promote healthier and safer communities through improved sanitation and behavior change initiatives.
Open defecation remains a major public health challenge in many rural parts of Ghana due to poverty, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and limited hygiene awareness. The practice contaminates water sources, spreads diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, and increases health risks for children and vulnerable populations. Poor sanitation also affects dignity, safety, and community wellbeing.
This project will support the construction of household and community toilet facilities, provide hygiene education, and implement community-led sanitation campaigns to encourage behavior change. It will also engage local leaders and residents to promote long-term sanitation practices and sustainability.
The project will reduce sanitation-related diseases, improve environmental cleanliness, and enhance public health in rural communities. Families will benefit from safer and more dignified sanitation facilities, while children will experience healthier living conditions. Over time, the project will contribute to stronger community hygiene systems and improved quality of life.
