Project Report - End Menstrual Poverty in Bulgaria

By Katerina Ivanova | Project Leader

During the first three months of our work, we focused on building a strong and lasting foundation. Before we place products in the hands of girls who need them, we wanted to ensure that our support is thoughtful, respectful, and truly effective.

In this initial phase, we:

  • Created our methodology for working with schools and families;
  • Formed partnerships with local organizations who understand their communities;
  • Secured business partners willing to donate menstrual products;
  • Developed clear, compassionate educational materials for students, teachers, and parents;
  • Presented the project at large-scale events such as conferences in the field of health care.

Even though large-scale distribution has not begun yet, these steps were essential. They ensure that every girl we reach will receive more than products — she will receive knowledge, dignity, and support.

Andrea’s story

We met Andrea (name changed), a 16-year-old girl whose story stays with us. Every month she experiences severe period pain and heavy bleeding that keep her away from school, sports, and friends. Her family, lacking menstrual health knowledge, dismisses her struggles as “normal” and will not allow her to see a gynecologist. On top of this, she often cannot afford menstrual products.

Andrea reminds us why this project matters. Menstrual poverty is not only about missing products — it’s about missing care, education, and understanding. And this is exactly what we aim to change.

What comes next

In the coming months, we will begin distributing products and hosting our first educational workshops. Thanks to your support, we are now ready to bring real relief and confidence to girls like Andrea — and to make sure no girl in Bulgaria feels alone or ashamed because of her period.

Thank you for standing with us. Your kindness is already making a difference. You are helping us break stigma, open conversations, and ensure that no girl or woman is left behind because of her period.
