Women Literacy & Empowerment Program is zealously working to provide functional literacy to underprivileged illiterate adult women of deprived communities. The women are unable to perform basic day-to-day activities such as reading newspapers, reading bus numbers, and helping children with the studies. Education is imparted via the Computer Based Functional Literacy Program and are taught basic Hindi and Arithmetic. Currently, we are organizing 414 Women Literacy Centers in North Delhi.
The need assessment survey was carried out and it indicated the presence of a large number of illiterate women in Slums who put thumb impression on requisite documents. These women are adults and are in a wide range of age groups. They never attended formal schooling and some of them attended schools up to 2-3 standard only. While boarding the bus, they are unable to read the bus numbers and are frequently fleeced by the vendors for short change because they have zero knowledge of numbers.
After the completion of the program, beneficiaries women write a letter in their own handwriting about how the program has benefitted them. Beneficiaries can read and write small sentences and have knowledge of numbers. They can perform the basic day-to-day activities with ease such as reading the bus numbers, signing the requisite documents, and are no longer fleeced by the vendors for a short change.
Education made the beneficiaries to earn the respect in the family, and in the community. The process of learning to read and write inculcates confidence, and empowerment in them. They are not shy to move out of their homes and can travel to distant places without any fear & hesitation. Besides, they visit their children's parent's teacher meeting and proudly sign the register. Hence, the bond between the mother and the children enhances. If you educate a woman, you educate a nation.
