Summary

Rawalpindi's vulnerable communities near Nullah Lai face flooding, water scarcity, waste-clogged drains, and food insecurity. During monsoons, water enters homes while safe drinking water remains scarce. This project empowers women through rainwater harvesting, household waste segregation, composting, and rooftop gardening. Women will turn organic waste into compost and grow fresh food, reducing household waste, improving food security, conserving water, and strengthening climate resilience.

Challenge

Rapid urbanization, climate change, water scarcity & vast infrastructure are increasing risks in Rawalpindi.People living near Nullah Lai face frequent monsoon flooding with water entering homes while safe drinking water remains scarce due to contamination and disrupted supplies.Waste dumping blocks drains worsening flooding & sanitation risks. Rising food costs & limited space further increase food insecurity.Women manage household water, food and waste but often lack resources & skills.

Solution

Project will empower women with practical climate-smart skills to strengthen household resilience. They will be trained to install and manage rainwater harvesting systems, conserve water and reduce flood runoff, will learn to segregate household waste, keep garbage out of drains and turn organic waste into compost. They will establish rooftop gardens to grow fresh vegetables, improving food security. Women will also share their knowledge, becoming local leaders in Climate resilience.

Long-Term Impact

The project will build a women-led model of climate resilience that can be sustained and replicated across Rawalpindi and other vulnerable cities. Women will strengthen household water security through rainwater harvesting, reduce flooding risks by managing waste and keeping drains clear, and improve food security through rooftop gardening and composting. Cleaner communities, stronger household resilience, and empowered women climate leaders will create lasting environmental, social benefits.
