Project Progress Report:
The Empowering Women for Climate Smart Cities in Rawalpindi project is designed to help women respond to the growing challenges of climate change while creating opportunities for greater household resilience and economic independence. Although the project has not yet received a donation through GlobalGiving, the women engaged through our community-based work are already benefiting from practical climate-smart interventions and skills.
One of the key interventions is the installation of rainwater harvesting units, which enable women to collect and conserve rainwater for essential domestic activities. In many of the communities we work with, municipal water supply is unreliable or unavailable, placing an additional burden on women, who are often responsible for managing water for their households. By providing a simple and sustainable way to capture rainwater, these units help women save water, reduce pressure on limited resources, and become better prepared for periods of water scarcity.
The project also introduces women to composting as both an environmental practice and an income-generating opportunity. Women learn how to transform household organic waste into useful compost instead of sending it to already overburdened waste streams. With the right training, resources, and market linkages, compost can be produced and sold locally, allowing women to develop a small but meaningful source of income from a climate-friendly activity.
We are also supporting women to develop rooftop gardens and provide them with basic planting and sowing knowledge as well as giving them gardening tools to start growing their own food and become food secure.
Our vision goes beyond individual households. We want women to become climate-smart community leaders who can share their knowledge with neighbours, encourage sustainable practices, and contribute to more resilient urban communities.
Additional funding through GlobalGiving would allow us to reach more women, install more rainwater harvesting units, conduct additional composting and entrepreneurship trainings, and provide women with the tools and support needed to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Every donation can help transform a woman from a recipient of climate solutions into an empowered creator of them—building stronger households, greener communities, and more climate-resilient cities.
