Empowering Mayan women through ancient textiles

Huixtán, Chiapas.

My dream is to learn more and travel with my products to far places, places as far as people in love are, as far as people of good heart and good feelings are.

My name is Carmela. I live in Huixtán municipality in Chiapas, Mexico. I am 25 years old and live with my mom, my dad and two sisters. My mom taught me to embroider since childhood. When I turned 15, I started to improve my embroidery skills with my aunt’s help. When you embroider the time goes by so fast, it's something that I really like. My favorite motif to embroider are flowers. In Huixtán we have many beautiful flowers that brighten our eyes. When we are embroidering flowers we forget the problems, we smile, we remember who we are and if we are in love our embroidering is dedicated to our love.

I could not continue studying because my parents could not send me to the secondary school which is far from the village. We had no money because my dad did not have a job, sometimes he works in the field planting corn and beans and sometimes he does some carpentry work.

To raise some money my mother and I, start to work as artisans, my mom taught me to embroider but she cannot do it anymore, because of her age, she cannot see quite good now. I am collaborating with impacto because I could learn to do my best and most beautiful handicrafts, and because I love learning to embroider better, how to make better products, as how to create new ones. What I like the most about working with impacto is that I can use many beautiful colors and see all the new objects that I can create now. I really like using my imagination to create new things, working together with impacto and other women, together, we review the work. I think my embroidery is improving a lot and I want to learn many new things and bring my products to many places out of here, out on Mexico and elsewhere.

My dream is to travel, to reach other places, because, thanks to impacto I started traveling, we went to Oaxaca city, where we were taken to learn other techniques, to see other handicrafts and know how artisans make them. Oaxaca is a beautiful city and people are very friendly. Before that trip I was very scared because I had never gone so far, I only travel to San Cristobal, and when we started the trip I was afraid but I knew I had to go because I had to know and then tell all I can learn to the women in my group, so we could improve our craft together. While we were there we write down everything we saw and we liked very much how men and women help each other. In our community we had a discussion of gender equality impacto told us that men and women have the same value and that we must love, respect and care. We talked about in our homes and there are many men who agreed. Slowly, the women in the group, can go out and make our own decisions, to travel alone and go to San Cristobal to get embroider material. Before impacto came to the community, I was very afraid to leave the community, but now I know how to being alone in the city, and my parents know I can take care of myself. I am very happy to work as an artisan because I've been able to travel and meet many different people from many other countries and many other places. I am learning many new things and I want to travel a lot and continue to learn to learn new things and improve our products.

Mi sueño es aprender y viajar con mis productos muy lejos. Hasta donde estén las personas enamoradas, hasta donde estén las personas de buen corazón y buenos sentimientos.

Mi nombre es Carmela Hernández Vázquez. Vivo en el municipio de Huixtán, en Chiapas, México. Tengo 25 años y vivo con mi mamá, mi papá y dos hermanitas. Mi mamá me enseñó a bordar desde pequeña. Cuando cumplí 15 años empecé a aprender mejor con mi tía. Cuando bordo el tiempo se pasa muy rápido, es algo que me gusta mucho. Mi cosa favorita para bordar son las flores. En Huixtán tenemos muchas flores bonitas que nos alegran los ojos. Cuando bordamos las flores se nos olvidan los problemas, sonreímos, recordamos a quienes queremos y si estamos enamoradas dedicamos nuestros bordados a nuestro enamorado. Yo ya no pude seguir estudiando porque mis papás no podían enviarme a la escuela secundaria que está lejos del pueblo. No teníamos dinero porque mi papá no tiene un trabajo, a veces siembra maíz y frijol y otras veces hace trabajos de carpintería. Mi mamá me enseñó a bordar porque ella borda también pero ya casi no puede ver. Yo estoy trabajando con impacto porque me contaron que podía aprender a hacer mi artesanía mejor y más bonita, y porque me gusta mucho aprender sobre como bordar mejor, como hacer mejores productos, como hacer nuevos productos, lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo es utilizar muchos colores y ver todas las cosas que se pueden hacer nuevas. Usar nuestra imaginación para crear cosas nuevas, trabajar en equipo con las otras mujeres, reunirnos, revisar el trabajo. Pienso que mi bordado está mejorando mucho y que quiero aprender muchas cosas nuevas y llevar mis productos a muchos lugares fuera de aquí, a México y a otras partes del mundo.

Gracias a impacto conocí Oaxaca, donde nos llevaron para conocer otras técnicas, otras artesanas y saber como le hacen. Oaxaca es una ciudad muy bonita y las personas son muy amables. Cuando salí para Oaxaca tenía mucho miedo porque nunca había salido tan lejos, sólo a San Cristóbal, y cuando empezamos el viaje tuve miedo pero sabía que tenía que viajar porque tenía que conocer para luego contar todo lo que viera a las mujeres de mi comunidad, para que pudiéramos mejorar nuestras artesanías. Mientras estábamos allá anotamos todo lo que veíamos y nos gustó mucho como se ayudan los hombres y las mujeres allá. En nuestra comunidad tuvimos una plática de igualdad de género, impacto nos contó que los hombres y las mujeres tenemos el mismo valor y que tenemos que querernos, respetarnos y cuidarnos. Lo platicamos en nuestras casas y hay muchos hombres que estuvieron de acuerdo. Ya podemos salir, y tomar nuestras propias decisiones, viajar solas y salir a san Cristóbal para conseguir material. Antes yo tenía mucho miedo de salir de la comunidad, pero ahora ya sé estar sola en la ciudad, y mis padres saben que puedo cuidarme sola. Me siento muy feliz de trabajar como artesana porque he podido viajar y conocer a muchas personas diferentes, de muchos otros países y muchos otros lugares. Estoy aprendiendo muchas cosas nuevas y quiero viajar mucho y seguir conociendo para aprender nuevas cosas y mejorar nuestros productos.
