As COVID rates have continued to fluctuate, the Rising Minds Team is working diligently to continue to adapt our programming to meet our community partner’s needs. With the recent surge in new COVID-19 variants, we are continuing to expect the unexpected. Our youth group, community educator, and community partners are continuing to persevere. As we embark on year 3 of navigating this pandemic, it is more important than ever that children have access to interdisciplinary health and wellness education.

Since January 2022, Bonnie, our community health educator, has hosted twice a week educational enrichment opportunities for our youth group. On Wednesday afternoons, kids gather at our office space in San Juan La Laguna to participate in hands-on health workshops and tutoring programs. From learning about the personal hygiene practices and nutrition, to practicing vocabulary and multiplication, our kids are receiving the additional learning time that is so desperately needed.

On Fridays, students go on an outdoor adventure to learn about the mind, body, and environment. Romping through coffee fields and wandering around the shores of the lake, kids have a chance to engage in experiential learning experiences that foster their curiosity. Studies have found that giving children the space to engage with the wonders of the natural world has significant benefits for health, learning, and skill development, and has been connected with greater levels of calm and happiness in children.

Since January, Bonnie has led 15 tutoring sessions and 15 outdoor adventures.  This out of school learning time is combining relevant content knowledge with interactive, relevant, and engaging learning experiences, contributing to a well rounded, whole-child education.
