Discussion on proper use of sanitary products

As part of activities to facilitate the healthy development and access of young girls to Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services, Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar, on Sunday, 31st May 2026, in partnership with Calabar Municipal Leo club, organized an Open Day for interaction with her participants (adolescent girls) at her safe space center in Calabar to commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026. The activity aligned with the 2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day theme: “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” which calls for collective action to create a society where menstruation is accepted as a normal part of life and where everyone has access to menstrual health information, products, support and services.

The programme commenced with an opening remarks delivered by the Head of Adolescent Sexual & Reproductive Health Unit, followed by Purpose, Objectives, and Lions Code of Ethics, led by the Leo Calabar Municipal Club President.

A health practitioner - Mrs. Maria Odun, facilitated an informative session with the girls on menstrual health, educating participants on the menstrual cycle, proper hygiene practices, and ways to prevent infections.

To enhance practical understanding of the discussions, a demonstration on the correct use and disposal of sanitary products was conducted. Participants also took part in a myth-busting session to challenge common misconceptions and harmful beliefs surrounding menstruation. A question-and-answer segment encouraged open dialogue and allowed participants to seek clarification on sensitive issues without fear or embarrassment. The event concluded with the distribution of sanitary kits to participants by GPI.
