Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines

By Kajubi Jimmy | Project Leader

Dear Donors

Yesterday, Karitas Relief Mission continued its efforts to empower vulnerable girls and young women through vocational training in tailoring and sewing. The project aims to provide girls with practical skills that can help them become self-reliant, earn an income, and improve the living conditions of their families.

As part of our continued preparation for the program, we met with members of the school staff, directors, and some of the girls who are interested in receiving sewing and tailoring skills.

2. Meeting with Staff, Directors, and Girls

During yesterday’s meeting, we discussed the progress of the sewing machine project and the preparations needed before the girls begin their training.

The staff and directors shared their views on how the training can be organized effectively and how the girls can be supported throughout the program. We also listened to the girls themselves so that their needs, expectations, and concerns could be understood.

The girls expressed great enthusiasm about the opportunity to learn sewing and tailoring. Many of them explained that they have a strong desire to acquire practical skills but have not been able to afford vocational training because of financial difficulties.

3. Inspection of Training Classrooms

We also inspected the classrooms where the girls will receive their training. The visit helped us assess the available learning space and identify preparations that need to be completed before training begins.

The classrooms provide a foundation for the program, and we are continuing to work with the school staff and directors to ensure that the learning environment is suitable for practical sewing and tailoring lessons.

4. Girls' Expectations and Challenges

One of the most encouraging parts of the meeting was hearing directly from the girls. They shared how eager they are to begin learning skills that can give them greater opportunities in the future.

Some girls explained that poverty and lack of funds have prevented them from joining vocational training programs. They were encouraged by the assurance that, once the necessary resources are available, they will be given the opportunity to join the program and begin their studies.

For many of these girls, sewing is more than simply learning a trade. It represents an opportunity to develop confidence, become economically independent, and eventually support themselves and their families.

5. Progress Toward the Project Goals

The project is making important progress in preparing for the training phase. The involvement of the school leadership, staff, and girls is helping us build a strong foundation for implementation.

The project currently seeks to support 156 girls with practical sewing and tailoring skills. The availability of sewing machines remains an important part of ensuring that the girls can receive hands-on training.

6. Challenges

The major challenge remains limited financial resources. Some girls are ready and willing to begin training but come from families that cannot afford vocational education.

There is also a continuing need for additional sewing machines and other materials required for practical training. Without sufficient equipment, it will be difficult to accommodate all the girls who are interested in participating.

7. Next Steps

Karitas Relief Mission will continue to:

- Mobilize resources to acquire additional sewing machines.

- Prepare the classrooms and training environment.

- Work closely with school staff and directors.

- Identify and organize the girls who will participate in the training.

- Ensure that vulnerable girls are given opportunities regardless of their families' financial circumstances.

- Monitor the girls' progress once training begins.

- Continue seeking partners and supporters who can help expand the program.

8. Conclusion

Yesterday's meeting was an encouraging step forward for the Empowering Girls with Sewing Machines project. Meeting the girls personally and hearing their hopes reminded us of the importance of this initiative.

The girls are eager to learn, but many are held back by poverty and lack of opportunities. With the support of partners and well-wishers, Karitas Relief Mission hopes to provide them with the sewing machines, training, and encouragement they need to acquire practical skills and build more secure futures.

We remain grateful to everyone who continues to support this initiative. Every sewing machine and every contribution brings us closer to giving these girls an opportunity to learn, work, and become self-reliant.
