Hailing from Daboon village, in rural Southern Rajasthan, India, Sita is a 33 year old mother to 3 kids working a job as a small-scale farmerette. Her husband Mangi is a daily wage laborer. They both work extensively to make ends meet yet it is not always possible to. They have been cultivating seasonal crops as per availability of water in the nearby shared water resources.
This year Sita, associated herself with Seva Mandir’s agriculture program. In doing so she received agri inputs and training for onion cultivation in their 0.5 bigha of land. Once transplanted from the nursery, she used an improved method of farming by getting water from an open well and irrigated the farm 6 times. It is also noteworthy to add, that only farmyard manure was applied in the field. There was no fertilizer nor pesticide used.
Sita also attended the trainings imparted by Seva Mandir on package of practices of the crop. In June, 2022 they harvested more than 1,600 kgs of onion. After setting aside some onion for sustenance, they sold 1,500kgs of onion at Rs. 20 ($0.24) per kg and earned a sum of Rs.30,000 ($367) from selling their surplus. Sita shares gratuitously, “I have never earned this much when I sold Wheat or Maze. This is the first time my land has given me this much in return”.
This is just one example of the impact of Seva Mandir’s program on women farmers. A big thank you goes to you, our faithful supporters. With your help, we have been able to continue successfully running this program and impact more lives of farmers such as Sita.
We hope that you will continue lend a helping hand to support our programme. For only $50, you can help train 1 rural woman, like Sita, on advanced farming techniques of vegetable and floriculture cultivation.
