Empower Costa Rican girls in technology & robotics

Dear friends of the Quirós Tanzi Foundation, we hope that this news will make you very happy, we have just carried out online workshops for the COVID-19 emergency-pandemic where adolescents had female empowerment sessions learning about their capacities, multiple intelligences and began to use the arduino to build your projects.

Thanks to your donation, this was possible. 

Although 100% of the participants frequently use the cell phone and computer, whether to use the internet, social networks, communicate with other people and carry out educational responsibilities, due to the current situation of Covid-19. Is achieved with this intervention, that there is an increase in the frequency of use of the devices technological, the arduino robotics kit that many were unaware of, and use of tools digital and collaborative, in the sessions.
In relation to robotics and programming, it was previously identified that only one 5.2% had had an experience in programming, although 78.5% recognized the concept and functionality of robotics. After the completion of the virtual course, 75% of the participants mentioned that they have a basic domain in robotics, doing emphasis on the Arduino kit, and 83.3% said they learned to program during the course; It should be noted that the remaining percentage is equivalent to two mothers, who work responsibilities participated more in the reflection than in the programming and construction with kit.

The Connecting Project is a public-private initiative between the Ministry of Education Public and the Quirós Tanzi Foundation. Its purpose is to reduce the digital social gap through the integration of technology, as a tool for learning. It has several strategies to achieve this end, and all have been developed in person for 9 years.

The project had to be transformed to respond to this new context of COVID-19, this is why the Connecting Online strategy has been implemented since March, whose objective is to meet the educational needs of the beneficiary population of the Project Connecting and extending support to more teachers, families and children, through dissemination of digital resources and virtual learning spaces.

Strategies for Teachers and Directors:

• The following virtual spaces were enabled for serve teachers and principals:
• 92 Preschool and Primary workshops have been developed, in virtual mode, with an attendance of 277 teachers, in which 155.5 hours are dedicated.
• A total of 116 sessions have been carried out per video calls for coaching advice from Preschool and Primary to 146 teachers,with a dedication of 156 hours.
