In the quest to empower girls on livelihood alternatives, Songtaba has supported community role models to share experience with 665 out of school girls club on the need and importance of learning technical and vacation skills as livelihood alternatives. The beneficiaries were both senior and junior high school graduates, who have successfully completed their basic education and currently looking for opportunities to either continue with tertiary or senior high school education.
The girls club members were taken through the importance of learning skills including tailoring, catering, smock weaving , bees making etc. Participants were told vocational and technical skills make you economically independence and serve as an additional sources income for future professional workers. She further indicated, no technical or vocational skills is reserve for any gender, everyone has the right to learn any skills of his/her choice. She urged the unemployed girls to get in to skills learning to help reduce poverty among women and girls in the country.
A 16 years old Nancy, a senior high school graduate form Baduli has this to say “I am very excited to learn the importance of technical and vocational skills. I was already interested in learning smock weaving to change the statuesque of it being an exclusive skill for only males. I shall encourage my parents to get me enroll in to learning such skills to be economically empowered to support my parent and myself. I thank songtaba and their partners for such wonderful emancipation”.
Many of the girls were overwhelmed to hear girls can go into vocation such as mechanics, smock weaving, carpentry, building and construction, electrical work, painting etc. They claimed those skills in their communities are mostly learned by males and they hardly see female in such ventures. They were committed to learn those skills to be economically independence, instead of being liability to parents and future spouse.
