Empowering Girls in School

To ensure girls club members continue to build their capacity to lead their own development agenda, songtaba has organized experience sharing meeting for 58 girls club mentors (38 males and 20 females) to create a platform for participants to tap in to each other’s rich experience on how to manage girls at their respective communities/schools. The activity had the potential of benefiting 1225 girls from 35 clubs at both Nanumba North and south district.

Participants at the meeting shared success from their clubs, among those successes shared includes:

• Girls club activities at the school level have reduced school dropout due to discussion on importance and need for girls child education.
• Girls are now empowered and shared issues that affect them in schools and at home for immediate redress; this practice has recue a girls from force marriage etc.
• Continuous discussion on personal hygiene has improve girls hygiene
• Girls now reports cases of abuse to the right institutions.
• School level girl’s club activities have improved leadership position among girls.

Participants also identified some challenges that impede smooth implementation of girls club activities in school. These were:

• Lack of logistic for effective implementation of activities such books , manila cards etc
• Parents does not value the importance of girls club, hence more education needs to be done at the community level
• Lack of motivation packages for club members who excel at school

Participants were later taken through strategies of sustaining girls club in schools. Strategies discussed and agreed for adaption and practice were, Scouting for potential collaborators to support girl’s club activities, Capturing club activities in school annual plan, Strengthening and building district girls club movement. The meeting made a tremendous progress of empowering girls in and out of school and improved participant’s knowledge on how to manage girls club in schools.
