Girls mark international day of the girl child

By Lamnatu Adam | Project Leader

International day of the girl child is a globa event to celebrate the girl child and also to highlight some of the barriers to girls development so that collective society can address these challenges and creat a better society free from discrimination and with equal participation of all. Songtaba in our work with girls marked the International day of the girls child with the objective to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address specific girls focus problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

Accross all 19 sponsorship communities, girls clubs organised a community level dialogue meetings. these meetings were open to every community member to participate where honest conversations were held to discuss specific girls centered initiatives that communities should take note of. A total of 655 girls with several community members estimated at 700 (both men and women).

The girls first of all commended the community leaders for their continuous support for girls growth by creating more space for girls enrollement. They also acknowledged that in some of the basic schools now girls enrollment have exceeded boys which previously was very low, and that is a good sign that leadership is listening and working to improve girls empowerment in rural communities.

however, the girls indicated that despite the increasing enrollements, schools are still faced with some basic need like teaching and learning materials including text and reading books, uniforms and places of convinience.

"We need to uphold the equal rights, voices and influence of girls in our families, communities and nations. Girls can be powerful agents of change, and nothing should keep them from participating fully in all areas of life." — UN Secretary-General António Guterres. In all the engagement sessions, the above words set the agenda for discussions to begin and guided the meeting all through.

It was really an exciting experience seeing how these empowered girls lead the whole even to a great end. Truly the girls are leading the path to their own development with your support.
