One Thread Collective empowers Wayuu women weavers in La Guajira, Colombia to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting change in their remote communities. By providing fair trade income, business skills, micro loans, leadership training, and community-led project capital, we equip these women to become entrepreneurs, community leaders, and agents of sustainable development. Together, we're weaving a future of independence and hope, one thread at a time.
The Wayuu are called Colombia's "forgotten people." More than 300,000 Wayuu face severe food & water insecurity due to rising temperatures, desertification, and drought, combined with state neglect, corruption, and lack of basic services. With limited income opportunities, especially for women, economic hardship is widespread. This project empowers Wayuu women with fair trade work, educational programs, and community-led project funding to build healthier, more sustainable communities.
Our Women's Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Program provides skill building workshops, one-on-one mentorship, community project grants, and interest-free micro loans for women weavers to break down barriers to economic independence while preserving the Wayuu ancestral tradition of weaving.
Investing in training Wayuu women to be leaders and problem solvers in their remote villages not only has the potential to improve access to food & water in vulnerable communities - it also leads to them prioritizing their children's education. This program will break the cycle of poverty for over 100 Wayuu families, strengthening community resilience and creating more sustainable, self-sufficient Wayuu communities for generations to come.
