Due to stigmatization and marginalization there are a lot of deaf children neglected by society and lives on the streets. This Project will empower 800 deaf children through the teaching and learning of swimming. The project will offer them a unique opportunity to integrate with other kids through the sport of swimming and improve their overall self worth and confidence. Those who are not in school will be enrolled in specialized schools for the deaf while they integrate fully through swimming.
There is a huge social exclusion and discrimination among deaf children. They are excluded sections of the society with society's misperception that they are the 'Breed Apart'. In Cape Coast, Ghana there are more than 5000 deaf children who are pittied, ignored, vilified and hidden away in institutions or on the streets. This project is trying to reduce these barriers, reach these children and provide more than 800 of these children with a voice through education and the sport of swimming.
The project will provide education for deaf children through swimming. The kids will learn to play in water, learn the basics of swimming, survival in water among others. They will be supported to form swimming clubs in their institutions where they will be encouraged to participate in local and national competitions. The sport tutors of these kids will be trained in swimming to assist in the coaching and the overall development of these children to foster their individual development.
Physical activity participation is widely recognized as a critical component of health and development for disabled and non-disabled children. The project through the teaching of swimming will empower each and every child to achieve good health, education, and build on their self confidence. In the end we will have more deaf swimming coaches who will equally support other liked kids. Also in an area where drowning of children is almost every day spectacle,it would reduce drowning among children
