Hello, JA Friends and Supporters!
As students head back into the classroom for a new school year, we are thrilled to tell you about all of the wonderful things you’ve helped us achieve.
The goal of this GlobalGiving project was to deliver entrepreneurship programs to 300 students in kindergarten-12 grades during the fall of 2013. We are pleased to report that, with the help of over 100 volunteers donating 23,000+ hours, we surpassed that goal by impacting a total of 4,435 students in Southern Massachusetts last year!
Here are some of the things our students experienced, at no cost to the students or schools:
Classroom Programs: JA volunteers visited nearly 200 local classrooms for 5 - 7 weeks, about an hour per week, to engage students in hands-on, age-appropriate lessons to help them understand the importance of education and the many opportunities that are available to them, all while connecting the dots between what they’re learning in school and how it relates to the real world.
Job Shadow Program: More than 700 students had the opportunity to explore careers like healthcare, engineering, finance, legal, marketing, and sales by visiting local businesses where they observed a professional work environment, learned about the careers that are available and skills that are needed to excel within this industry, and talked to employees about their jobs and experiences.
JA Titan Challenge: On March 20th, 142 students from 13 area high schools participated in a one-day business strategy competition using an online business simulation program. The students were in charge of a virtual company and had to make key decisions around issues such as price production, marketing, capital investments, research and development and charitable giving, getting first-hand experience in the challenges of operating a successful global business. The top three performing teams took home college scholarships.
High School Heroes: In June, about 20 students in Fall River participated in the High School Heroes pilot initiative, during which they volunteered to teach a JA class at a local elementary school. This new initiative benefitted both the elementary school students (who received the JA curriculum) and the high school students (who learned valuable leadership teamwork skills, public speaking and presentation skills while gaining exposure to the teaching profession).
JA provides opportunities like no other for students in Southern Massachusetts. Please take a moment to read this testimonial from high school senior Jeremy Bare, who had JA in his classroom last year and was also a member of the Titan Challenge winning team:
