Devastating earthquakes, flooding, droughts, and other disasters has put Afghanistan on one of the highest alerts of environmental impact in the world. Climate change, climate risk, environmental health, and resource security have made Afghanistan a hot spot for loss of life. Medical and food relief teams are prepared to be some of the first responders when disaster strikes.
Afghanistan is located in a region prone to earthquakes. Since the infrastructure is very basic, there are very little building codes that keep families safe during an earthquake. The lack of infrastructure also inhibits the ability to control flooding. When combined with poverty, lives are lost. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/deadly-afghanistan-earthquakes-over-years-2023-10-08/
Initially we have medical and relief teams that can quickly respond to disasters in certain parts of Afghanistan. This helps in the immediate aspect of a crisis: saving lives within 48 hours. In certain instances, we have teams that will help to rebuild their homes or provide assistance that we help them recover jobs and loss of income.
Although we can not stop environmental disasters to occur, we can prepare those in the region where we work to prepare themselves for disasters. This training includes food preparation, home building and stabilization, and job creation.
