Summary

More babies die at birth in Afghanistan than any nation on earth. A lack of education, access to medical facilities, income, basic hygiene, and cultural norms make this nation #1 in infant mortality. The death of women during childbirth is also in the top 10. Our Birth Training Program equips mothers and fathers to prepare for a healthy birth. We have seen an 80% drop in infant mortality after the 3-month training course for rural Afghan families.

Challenge

Afghanistan is #1 in infant mortality and #8 in maternal mortality. Now with women restricted to a 6th grade education, these rates will only get worse. A lack of education, access to medical facilities, income, basic hygiene, and cultural norms make this nation the worse place to be a woman and deadly for pregnant women.

Solution

The birth education program (officially called the Birth Life Saving Skills course) is a community-based health education course covering basic health, pregnancy, birth, new born care and family planning. The course, taught both to men and women, aims to raise community awareness of maternal-child health issues, and significantly reduce maternal and neo-natal mortality.

Long-Term Impact

The impact of this course is an 80% reduction in the number of infant deaths at the time of delivery. When families learn that their children have a greater chance of living, they can plan more effectively for a specific number of children that grow up in a healthy family environment.
