Emergency Relief for Refugee Families in Greece

Dear friends,

Our support for refugees arriving in Greece has become even more vital due to Covid 19. Please open 'your HUG' to refugee kids and families, who need your help more than ever, during this unprecedented period of strict lockdown that we have endured over the last16 months. People are hungry and this is leading to an increasing sense of anger and we are afraid that this will soon lead to violence.

We are doing everything we can but are facing a huge problem due to a lack of funds and the usual level of support from our 'helping hands’ who are fearful of the pandemic. 

We are also concerned that Erdogan remains a threatening presence to our country and refugee families.

Our needs

We need to pay essential running costs to ensure that our vehicles can continue to transport food and necessary supplies to families. We need your donations to keep our vehicles on the road, to pay for car insurance, oil and gas (petrol).

We are also in desperate need of necessary nourishment products for the refugee  families undeclared or made unemployed due to the Pandemic and who are trying to survive throughout one of the longest lockdowns in Europe.

Our success

We have had some success in our fund-raising activities. Greek companies have supported all of our demands for hygiene products and protection equipment from Covid 19 with huge quantities of gloves, antiseptics and masks. Thanks to their help and support we escaped the danger of having to stop our distributions, there was a real risk that we would have to stop for safety reasons.

We are also grateful for the support of the Power Health company which provided us with 1,500 bottles of Mourinol and Olister vitamin supplements that helps to build up the immunity of kids and adults to disease.

Our ask

Please find it in your hearts to support these refugee families in Greece. We feel deeply sorry for the pitiful condition of some of these undeclared kids and their families who have re-occupied many of the buildings in the centres of Athens. Many are hoping and trying to leave Greece soon.  They have no work, or any other source of income and cannot cover their most basic needs. They have nothing apart from what we can give them because of their undeclared status.

The Greek Government does provide financial support to all declared refugees, but as human beings we can't abandon to fate those who live in despair because they are undeclared.

Hope you remain safe at home. We will gain this fight for life together, supporting each other with care and patience. Please remember there are kids during C19 umprotected from the virus, evern worst from hunger and winter cold.

When Salua fled Syria with her three young children she brought only what she had could carry for the long journey ahead. Each child had just two changes of clothes - everything else had been left behind. “We used to have a car, a shop and a house,” she says, sitting on the floor in a barely furnished room in a tiny apartment in Athens. Salua is just one of the many thousands of Syrian refugee women who are the head of their household due to the decade-long civil war. Salua’s husband was killed when the bus he was travelling in was hit by a bomb. Over 80 per cent of Syrian refugees live in urban areas of Greece. They have to find money for all the usual living expenses such as rent, food, school supplies and medical expenses. But for women, it’s difficult to secure work. Only a small per cent of refugee work permits have gone to women. Without a regular income, many women are forced to borrow money which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous agents or landlords, or they resort to other negative coping strategies such as restricting their own food so their children can eat. Children often stay home from school when money is tight so that their families can save on the cost of books and transport. Schooling is important to Salua, who takes obvious pride in her children’s drawings. If Salua did not have the constant worry about living costs, she would concentrate on building a better future for herself and her family.

Greece continues to wrestle with the ongoing migrant crisis. Europe is definitely not capable to deal with this severe problem. Many of the refugees have been tortured, others had difficulty finding a work and fear for their safety. A lot of them are still looking for a missing member of their families. What they all need is to feel safe, to be fed, to have access in medical services and education, to find a job and a “home”.

Kids & Family helps these families to survive. It offers on-site medical care, psychological assistance, food, clothing and personal hygiene items. It also makes external referrals for medical care (such as hospitals, etc.). The organization also organizes activities for children, foreign language departments and provides social support. It also develops solidarity and public awareness actions for refugees and locals.

We need your support, in order to provide humanitarian help to the most vulnerable refugees, such as families with children, pregnant women, refugees with special needs, refugees suffering from serious health problems and victims of shipwrecks who have lost loved ones at sea. Solidarity keeps the inner harmony of the world.

Our dream is to create a center that supports and integrates refugee families in Greece. Greek state alone cannot develop a strategy in order to solve the problem. Kid & Family is not just an alternative, but the only solution the country can currently provide. Together we can embrace desperate refugee families, keep them alive and give them hope.
