Free Medical Camps for Flood-Affected Communities in Kasur –Till Dec 2025 Update

In August–September 2025, unprecedented monsoon rains and sudden releases of water from upstream dams caused one of the worst flood situations along the Sutlej River in decades. At Ganda Singh Wala, near Kasur, the river reached exceptionally high flood levels, forcing large-scale evacuations from the border belt and inundating villages, homes, crops, and basic infrastructure.

Thousands of families from low-lying border villages in Kasur were displaced to makeshift relief sites and temporary shelters. Many of them lost their livelihoods overnight. Access to health services collapsed as basic health facilities were cut off, medicines were washed away, and roads became unsafe or impassable. Women, children, people with disabilities, older persons, pregnant and lactating women, and adolescent girls and boys were among the most vulnerable to disease, malnutrition, and trauma in this crisis.

Against this backdrop, Good Thinkers Organization–Pakistan (GTO-Pakistan) established a series of Free Medical Camps for flood-affected communities in Kasur’s border area, with a special focus on Ganda Singh Wala and its surroundings.

Where We Worked

With the support of our well-wishers and GlobalGiving community, GTO-Pakistan organized free medical camps in three highly affected locations in the border belt of Kasur:

• Talwar Post
• Village Sehjra
• Bhedian Kalan

These villages host both displaced families and local residents whose houses, fields, and access roads were severely impacted by the floods. Many families are still living in or around flood relief camps and temporary shelters.

Who We Reached

Through these medical camps, GTO-Pakistan provided free medical checkups and essential medicines to a total of 970 people, including:

• 560 women
• 100 older men
• 310 children (girls and boys)

Within these groups, we prioritized:

• Pregnant women (antenatal checkups, blood pressure and basic screening, danger-sign counseling)
• Mothers with breastfeeding and young children
• Older persons with chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, joint pain, respiratory issues)
• Adolescent girls and boys, often overlooked in emergency health responses

Many of the women and children we met were either living in Flood Relief Camps or had only recently returned to partially damaged homes with no reliable access to health facilities and medicines.

What Services We Provided

During the free medical camps, the GTO-Pakistan team (doctors, paramedics, and volunteers) provided:

• General medical consultations for adults and children, including fever, infections, skin problems, respiratory complaints, diarrheal diseases, and minor injuries related to flood conditions.
• Focused care for pregnant and lactating women, including:
• Clinical checkups and blood pressure monitoring
• Identification of high-risk pregnancies for referral
• Advice on nutrition, rest, and danger signs during and after pregnancy
• Care for older persons, especially those suffering from chronic pain, mobility challenges, and stress or exhaustion resulting from displacement.
• Care for adolescent girls and boys, focusing on:
• General health and common ailments
• Menstrual health information and basic hygiene advice for girls
• Counseling on safe water, hygiene, and protection risks in camp settings
• Distribution of essential medicines, with priority for:
• Women in flood relief camps
• Children with infections and dehydration risks
• Older persons and those with chronic conditions needing immediate relief

In addition to clinical services, our team used the opportunity to share practical health education messages on:

• Safe drinking water, handwashing, and household hygiene in flooded environments
• Prevention of waterborne diseases and skin infections
• Basic mental well-being and stress management for families who have lost homes and livelihoods

Human Impact – Beyond Numbers

Behind every number in this report is a family trying to rebuild life after the water recedes. Many families we met had:

• Lost crops and livestock, leaving them without income to pay for private healthcare or medicines.
• Seen their children suffer repeated episodes of fever, diarrhea, and skin infections because of contaminated water and poor shelter conditions.
• Older persons who could not travel to distant health facilities and were effectively cut off from care.

For pregnant women and mothers with small children, the fear of complications without access to medical help was evident. By bringing free, on-site medical services and medicines into these villages and camps, GTO-Pakistan helped fill a critical gap at a time when the formal health system was overstretched or physically inaccessible.

Next Steps – How We Plan to Continue

The needs in Kasur’s flood-affected villages remain significant, even as waters recede. Families will continue to face health risks for months due to:

• Contaminated water sources
• Damaged homes and overcrowded temporary shelters
• Loss of income and food insecurity
• Limited access to government health facilities

With continued support from our GlobalGiving partners, GTO-Pakistan aims to:

• Organize additional rounds of free medical camps in remaining high-need villages and camps.
• Strengthen referral pathways for high-risk pregnant women, complicated medical cases, and children needing specialized care.
• Provide follow-up medicines and basic health supplies for families with chronic or long-term conditions.
• Continue health and hygiene education to prevent outbreaks and support long-term resilience.
