Emergency Preparedness Update: Training, Crates, and Fire Prevention Progress

By Deborah Wyche | Project Leader

At Cat Tales Wildlife Center, emergency preparedness continues to be an active and ongoing part of protecting the animals who depend on us for lifelong care. While there have been no new donations to this project since our last report, the need remains important, and the work has continued through staff effort, planning, and careful use of available resources.

Our Emergency Preparedness Fund helps support the equipment, training, and fire-prevention work needed to respond safely and effectively during wildfire season or other emergencies. Many of the animals in our care are large, senior, or require specialized handling, which makes advance preparation essential.

Since our last update, we have continued emergency training activities with staff and students. These training events help reinforce safe procedures, clarify roles, and give our team more confidence in how to respond if an evacuation or urgent containment situation occurs. Practicing ahead of time allows us to identify what works well, what needs improvement, and what additional supplies are still needed.

We have also purchased additional transport crates. These crates are an important part of our emergency plan because they provide safer, more secure options for moving animals if evacuation or temporary relocation ever becomes necessary. Having the right crate available for the right animal can make a critical difference during a stressful situation.

In addition to training and equipment, we have continued our fire-prevention work around the property. Most recently, approximately three tons of pine needles and multiple scrub trees were removed from the grounds. This vegetation management helps reduce dry fuel loads and supports better defensible space around animal areas, guest areas, and access routes.

Current project status:

Total Goal: $10,000
Raised to Date: $2,150
Remaining Need: $7,850
Number of Donors: 13
Monthly Donors: 1

Even when fundraising progress is slow, the need for preparedness does not stop. Wildfire risk remains a serious concern in the Inland Northwest, and emergency planning must happen before there is a crisis. Every transport crate, every training session, and every load of dry vegetation removed helps strengthen the safety plan for the animals, staff, students, and visitors at Cat Tales.

Your continued support helps provide:

Specialized transport crates for safer animal movement
Emergency training for staff and students
Vegetation management and defensible space
Supplies and systems that improve readiness before a crisis

We are deeply grateful to every donor who has supported this project. Your generosity helps us take practical, measurable steps to protect the animals who call Cat Tales home.

With appreciation,

Deborah Wyche & the Cat Tales Team
