Emergency Preparedness Fund — Donor Report Summary
February 2026 Update
By Deborah Wyche | Founder
At Cat Tales Wildlife Center, the safety and well-being of our animal residents continues to guide every decision we make. As wildfire seasons grow longer and more intense across the Inland Northwest, our Emergency Preparedness Fund remains a critical part of protecting the animals who rely on us for lifelong care.
Since our last report, we are grateful to share that an additional $300 in donations has come in to support this effort. Every gift helps us take another step toward readiness.

Why This Fund Matters
Wildfire risk is an increasing reality in our region. Many of the animals in our care are large, senior, or non-releasable wildlife who require specialized handling and equipment. Evacuation planning for them is complex and must be done well in advance of any emergency.
Preparedness means more than reacting to a fire. It means having the right tools, training, and systems in place before danger ever reaches our gates.
How Donations Are Used
Your contributions directly support four key areas:
Specialized Transport Kennels
Safe, species-appropriate evacuation carriers for animals of all sizes.
Advanced Communication Tools
Radios and coordination systems for clear staff communication during emergencies.
Staff & Student Emergency Training
Drills and protocol practice to ensure fast, confident responses.
Fire Prevention Measures
Vegetation management, tree removal, and defensible space around enclosures.
Ongoing Progress
Thanks to your support and staff effort, we continue to build a stronger safety foundation:
7.5 tons of dry debris removed from critical areas to reduce fire fuel.
Hazardous and diseased trees removed near animal and guest zones.
Updated fire safety inspections completed with recommendations implemented.
Evacuation drills conducted to clarify roles and procedures.
Initial containment supplies staged for rapid response.
These steps may not always be visible to visitors, but they are essential to keeping our animals safe.
Long-Term Impact
Your support helps create:
Protection: Reduced fire risk for animals and staff
Preparedness: Faster, more organized emergency response
Resilience: Stronger infrastructure during extreme conditions
Leadership: A model for other sanctuaries facing wildfire threats
