Emergency Report: Natural Disasters and Humanitarian Crisis the past few days , in the Peloponnese area, Greece
Dear friends,
we welcomed Spring 2026 trilled of joy we welcomed Volunteering Help from the UK, Cyprus to get prepared for the floods we clearly expected after the deadly fires of 2025 in Greece
We created chains of aid, volunteers and residents who were grateful and saw us more as a gift from heaven, since every road network that connected them to the city, Hospital, school, has been completely destroyed. All residents, even the oldest, participated very willingly, immediately joined groups with us.
The food we transported, was our first concern, to set up a social kitchen in each village, so that all residents would feel our care from the first day
Peloponnese region of southern Greece has suffered severe destruction caused by extreme weather phenomena, continuous flooding, earthquakes, road collapses, and major landslides across the Taygetos mountain range. Entire communities have been isolated, homes evacuated, and critical transportation routes destroyed.
The annex we are building in the Peloponnese has proven to be very important.
Since it also has a sea connection with islands and villages that lost their road network for many weeks due to landslides that destroyed many kilometers of roads.
Among the most severely affected areas is the mountain village of Alagonia in Messinia, where repeated landslides and road subsidence led to the complete blockage of access roads, cutting residents off from essential services, emergency aid, and transportation.
Heavy rainfall, unstable ground conditions, and ongoing geological activity continue to threaten lives, homes, and infrastructure throughout the region. Authorities have declared emergency conditions in several affected communities due to the escalating danger.
Severe Landslides in Mount Taygetos
The Taygetos mountain area has experienced catastrophic landslides following persistent storms and torrential rainfall. Massive rockfalls, collapsing slopes, and dangerous ground subsidence have destroyed roads connecting mountain villages with Kalamata and Sparta.
According to regional reports, “the whole mountain has fallen,” illustrating the scale of destruction affecting the region.
Continuous rainfall caused:
Entire settlements in the Taygetos region were evacuated as authorities warned of additional landslides and further collapses.
Complete Isolation of Alagonia Village
The village of Alagonia became one of the symbols of the disaster after the only access roads suffered severe collapses and landslides.
Authorities reported:
The road connecting Nedousa, Mardaki, and Alagonia remained closed for extended periods due to ongoing landslide activity and dangerous terrain instability.
Local residents faced:
Emergency crews and civil protection teams struggled to reopen roads because of continuing rainfall and unstable mountain conditions.
Widespread Infrastructure Damage
The broader Peloponnese region suffered extensive infrastructure destruction including:
The severe weather systems impacting Greece throughout 2025 and 2026 intensified the vulnerability of rural and mountainous communities already exposed to geological instability.
Several villages across Messinia and neighboring regions reported:
Humanitarian Concerns
Families living in isolated mountain villages remain vulnerable to:
Children, elderly residents, and people with disabilities are among the most vulnerable populations affected by the disaster.
The combination of floods, earthquakes, unstable slopes, and collapsing road infrastructure has created a prolonged humanitarian emergency requiring urgent support, reconstruction, and long-term disaster prevention measures.
Call for International Support
Communities across the Peloponnese urgently need:
Without immediate intervention, many mountain communities remain at risk of prolonged isolation and further destruction.
