deadly floods in Greece
we need your help!
Dear frineds after a 2025 full of criminal fires, 2026, Greece continued to face severe weather-related disasters driven by climate change, with significant humanitarian and social impacts.
Floods in regions such as Thessaly, Central Macedonia, and Western Greece caused extensive damage to housing, agriculture, and local infrastructure, displacing families and disrupting livelihoods.
Wildfires, intensified by prolonged heatwaves and strong winds, affected Attica, Evia, the Peloponnese, and several Aegean islands, leading to environmental loss and community evacuations.
Extreme heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 42°C, posed serious health risks, particularly for children, elderly people, and vulnerable families.
Severe local weather events, including hailstorms and strong winds, resulted in agricultural losses and increased economic pressure on rural communities.
These events highlighted the urgent need for rapid response, community support, and child- and family-focused interventions.

Out of the 800 sheep, only 80 survived. They were safely transported from the settlement of Zilefti to a barn outside Trikala using rescue boats.
On Sunday, the rescue teams were called to go to a farm in Zilefti, a small settlement in Trikala. The number of sheep that managed to be saved is discouraging, as out of 800, only 80 survived. They were safely transported to a barn outside Trikala with rescue boats. Antonis, who saw many dead animals in Megala Kalyvia as well, comments that one of the reasons the village was evacuated was the risk of the animals becoming a source of infection.
45 pumps, 15 generators, and 5 rescue boats
For Kostas, almost a week has passed since he left his home, and as he says, the time has come to return. "This is not our job; we are all volunteers. Our families support us because they know how much we love what we do. But now, it has also come for us..."

Prevention, the restoration of natural water flow, and serious spatial planning are the real challenge, while Civil Protection is called upon more and more frequently to operate in a state of alert.
The state machinery is on high alert.
