EleSense, Saving Elephants from Deadly Traintracks

 After 10 months of unwavering determination and overcoming countless obstacles—like delayed funding, national elections in India, and supply chain challenges— we are thrilled to announce that the equipment to be installed inside the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary has FINALLY arrived!

Despite the hurdles, our technical team on the ground stayed resilient, and focused. We’re now ready to kick off the installation of this life-saving phase by December 2024, ensuring safe migratory pathways and averting train collisions!

With boots on the ground, our team is also conducted surveys along treacherous train tracks, pinpointing the exact locations where cutting-edge AI-based EleSense devices will be installed. This life-saving device will alert train pilots, enabling them to reduce reckless speeds and avert senseless elephant deaths, creating safe corridors for our beloved elephants. This upgraded version, even has built-in cameras to track elephant movements in real time, ensuring their safety as they cross dangerous migratory paths.

The harsh reality is, 3-4 elephants are getting killed almost every day - electrocution, railway deaths, poisoning, poaching - the threats are endless! Alarming still is the dramatic decline in the number of elephants. According to the latest report by Wildlife Institute of India there has been a whopping 20% decline in elephant numbers.  Worse still, the 2022-23 estimate shows a staggering 41% slide in elephant numbers in the east-central Indian landscape in 2017. So, the fight to save these precious beings continues...

We are beyond excited to share some fantastic news with you! Our revolutionary AI-based EleSense device is making a monumental impact, saving the lives of hundreds of elephants. With its state-of-the-art technology, EleSense uses four sensors to monitor elephant patterns, movements, temperature, and height, achieving an astonishing 100% detection accuracy.

Did you know?

In the past six months alone, we've averted 95 train collisions with elephants, a feat made possible by your unwavering support.

Our camera traps have captured breathtaking moments: a mother elephant and her baby safely crossing train tracks, and a majestic bull elephant avoiding danger. These powerful images showcase the life-saving impact of the EleSense project.

In collaboration with grassroots champions BioMates and the Solitary Nature and Animal Protection (SNAP) Foundation, we are gearing up to install 60 more EleSense devices in northern West Bengal. This region, including the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and Buxa Tiger Reserve, has faced heartbreaking incidents where elephants have been tragically hit and killed by speeding trains. In Chapramari, a pregnant elephant was struck and dragged 200 meters before she took her last breath. In Buxa, a herd including a newborn baby was hit and killed, underscoring the urgent need for our intervention.

And here's where you come in – We need your help to keep this momentum going. We've raised $39,000 so far, and we have $36,000 left to reach our goal. Your generous contributions will help us protect these magnificent creatures, who are vital eco-engineers, climate heroes, and cultural treasures.
