Eggs Laying Hens!
By Sally Riggs | Director of Education and Health Outcomes
The chicken project in Matenwa is yielding better than expected results. Many of the hens began laying eggs ahead of schedule! Everyday, children from LKM school are assigned to either feed the chickens or clean the coops. And, their hard work is paying off! Every week, more and more hungry students are starting their day with a protein rich egg for breakfast. And now, the benefits of the chicken project is expanding to the adults in the village.
Two weeks ago, a special event was held at LKM school. Parents joined their children and constructed safe, roomy coops, big enough for two egg laying hens. Students who had been caring for the chickens at school facilitated the training. At the end of the day, every participating family returned home with a new way to help feed their family. Before long, it is anticipated that the benefits of this added protein will be observed throughout the village. In time, the children will be stronger and more resistant to disease, and eventually, protein-rich malnutrition will be greatly reduced or completely erradicated.

Hens enjoying their new home.
We are pleased to report that the "Egg Laying Hens for Haitian Families" is off to a great start! The La Gonave community teamed up and built several large coops to accommodate the arriving hens! Along with the hens, large sacks of chicken feed were also delivered.
It won't be long before the hens start laying protein rich eggs to feed the hungry families on the Haitian island of La Gonave.
None of this would be possible without your generous donations. We'll continue to provide the La Gonave communites with the resources and training to build coops and bring in egg laying hens to live safely inside them.
Check out the photo gallery to see the images that document the construction of the first coops, and the hens enjoying their new home.
